Is the world getting better or worse? Is globalization good or bad? Is the way we relate to each other changing? These seem like simple questions, but their answers conceal very divergent ways by which we understand our world.
Since the end of World War 2, the process of Globalization (the increase in movement of people, goods and capital across the world) has accelerated at a consistent rate. Within the last decade, we have seen politicians across all sides of the political spectrum and in many countries start to condemn Globalization as the cause of all of the woes faced by society. The loss of local jobs due to outsourcing, the effects of larger countries' market share on those of smaller nations and the large increase in political and economic migrants, immigrants and refugees are all considered to be results of Globalization. At the same time, Globalization has also had many positive impacts of the world. By increasing free trade between all countries it has provided economic opportunities for tens of millions of people and brought them out of levels of extreme poverty. It has also lowered the barriers and encouraged the coordination and cooperation between many countries in scientific and technological endeavours, as well as the exchange of culture and ideas.
I like Simon's content, but the musical interludes on his channel REALLY irk me.
