I am not as well versed in music theory as I used to be, but could it be an oddity arising from both songs basically being in the same meter? Artists like Elvis and the Beatles benefited hugely from being white while performing Black styles of music. It's still happening today with artists like Iggy Azalea.
I remember when I was a kid, around Christmas time, Smashmouth had a song called "Nuttin' For Christmas", and I didn't want to sing along because I was scared Santa would hear me, and I'd get nothing for Christmas.
