There was a former member of the WBC that did a reddit AMA not to long ago. He said that the business aspect is basically secondary because a lot of the members are well educated and are in the law field, this has allowed them to know when they can make a successful lawsuit.
However this former member said that all the family that remain in the WBC do truly believe that what they are doing is what God wants. He listed a bunch of Bible texts that they twist to justify their action.
It's just gonna get worse as time passes. The old generation will brainwash the new generation into completely believing WBC beliefs.

It probably started out as a scam when Phelps began the church, but as news agencies and interviews have revealed, they do their best to brainwash and indoctrinate their children so that they blindly follow the rest of the family.

Shirley's running it now and I will always repeat the fact that she's [B]only[/B] in it for media attention.
Why did she record her child sing a song about how much god hates America? Why does she write really crap parodies of songs? Why is she the one always at interviews/news reports?

I'm probably just being a conspirasy theorist about it, but I still don't believe that's the true case.
