I'm surprised I hadn't heard this was getting a live action movie. Honestly, I agree with Antimuffin. I'm kind of interested. I never watched the original anime though, so any glaring differences won't bother me as much.
I will say I think most live action anime ends up terrible because a lot of those anime concepts work really well in anime and anime alone, not as a hollywood production. I think Death Note could work.
So how many times that American media try adapting Anime and succeeding so far?
It's been a while since I've watched death note but this seems so insanely far off from the original? I think it's supposed to be, but... I don't like it. at all. It looks vastly different, and to me it looks quite bad actually. Like a generic teen action flick, and nothing like death note.

Well it's a "Netflix original" and "Based on" Death Note, so I assume they're going their own route with it.
Does anyone know if the 4 Japanese live action adaptations were any good? I assume they did well if there were 4 of them, but it may have just been a planned 4 part series thing. I still don't see this translating well into a live action movie.

Well, I mean I guess they are saying it's based on the original, not so much a full adaption.
Okay, so they changed the last names of the characters to "Americanize" them or something I guess, which just looks silly when they keep the main character's name "Light".
I mean, "Light Turner"? Really? :v:
And Willem Dafoe voices Ryuk. I don't know what to think about this at all.
I'm not a fan of the series but damn that ryuk tease was good

two trailers just today with the same 'popular source material' hook

Looks interesting.
I think Netflix can do it justice, and the scene with the people jumping seems pretty dark.
Wonder how dark they'll actually make it though
Willem Dafoe is Ryuk

Hot damn, two manga adaptations in one year!
Meanwhile there is no news on Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's Monster.
Bullshit
I'm a huge fan of Adam Wingard in general, but Keith Stanfield as L ? I can't see how that will work tbh. He looks like ISIS beheader in this trailer.
It seems like an interesting take, but I feel like the potential to fuck it up is pretty high given the original anime is pretty good.

Well at the very least the first half is pretty good. Really falls apart in the second half.
But there is a Death Note live-action movie already...?
What's the point?

maybe trying to ride on the ghost in the shell live action "trend" before it's even a trend.

This one has white people.
But in all seriousness, they probably are going a different route with it.
I don't think this will work though, even though Death note is probably the easiest popular shounen manga to adapt into live action (because there's no over the top action) the existence of shinigamis can still make it look hella cheesy. Ryuk looks fine when he's surrounded by other cartoon characters, but when he's surrounded by actual humans...

watch the clip I posted and tell me some nerds didn't end up hellbent on doing it right(by means of gritty/not-cartoonish rebooting)

As much as I would want that Del Toro has such bad luck with stuff he is attached to I'm not surprised it hasn't gone anywhere.

That's good. Adapting anime to movie format is hard as is. Toro's not really good enough to pull it off well.
I hope Ryuk is just Willem Dafoe in makeup
Netflix does good stuff, but I don't know about this. This doesn't feel like Death Note at all. It could just be a shitty trailer, though.
I feel like it would've been better suited as a series than a movie, too. But at least the ages-old western DN movie is finally getting done. It's been literally over a decade at this point since it was originally announced, right?

I kinda agree but -DEATH NOTE SPOILERS- [sp]the reason for the blue balling ending is pretty clear imo. You play with death, you better be smarter than those who want to live.In the end Light just got outsmarted p. much.[/sp]
I'm not impressed by the actor choice but the Shinigami's voice sounds great.
L's a black guy in this version for some reason
L's a black guy in this version for some reason
makes sense, in my mind. don't know what they're intention was, or the original intention of the original works... but Light and L are clearly very different from a Japanese perspective: A native Japanese student and a foreigner English white man. if this was set in america, we're dealing with the american perspective, so the best bet to set them apart would be to make one white and the other black. maybe giving L a british accent would set them apart even more and make L more "foreign" from the "native" Light.
just my guess. probably bullshit.
in my opinion, [sp]Light winning[/sp] at the end of season 1/beginning of season 2 was really strong and set things in motion pretty well for [sp]the rise of kira and folly of teru mikami[/sp] which was probably the best part of season 2. a lot of people don't think season 2 was very good, but these are the things i thought were great about it and made the whole series worth it. clearly this won't be happening in the movie, unless they do a part 2, so i wonder what they'll do here for a story.

Not Mark Hamill? Boo. Then again both actors are very OTT in their own ways ie Raimi's Spiderman and Batman: TAS. Imagine Ryuk's laugh by Hamill.
With the flim going its own direction is an odd choice, but for something that's not really insane like DBZ or AoT this could work. Death Note can work as an interesting Crime Drama if handled well.

I think I remember enjoying the second season till the character going against kira became the majority of the show. (can't remember his name, think it was like some 12 year old with blue hair right?)
I just didn't like the character, or that storyline.

yeah. [sp]one of L's successors, N or Near.[/sp] that character is pretty shit but [sp]i find that him wearing the L mask at the end really is self-aware that the character will never be as cool as L.[/sp]
