But what about the crowbar Barney gives you when you met him while you and Alyx are heading for the train station just before the hospital in episode 1 (I think, I haven't played it since I finished it when it came out). I don't think I can take this guy seriously if he doesn't check the facts!

Episode 1 would have never happened if Gordon didn't get the crowbar after the teleport malfunctioned.
Walter could have found Gordon's first crowbar, which is why barney said "you dropped this".
How would Barney know that it was Gordon's crowbar? It could be some disgruntled scientist yelling disgruntle disgruntle disgruntle while pounding away at anything with a crowbar and the marines took the crowbar away and spanked him. Than threw him in a ditch with Gordon.
