if you're anywhere but first, the game is willing to lavish you with items to fuck over whoever's ahead of you if it isn't just giving you coins for a small speed cap boost
if you're in first, you're probably gonna get nothing but coins and mushroom boosts, so you're essentially defenseless and at the mercy of pure luck as to whether the rest of the pack nuke the everliving shit out of you right before the finish line

Unless its Mario Kart 64 or Mario Kart Super Circuit, in which case blue shells can hit you from any position except 8th (though you can dodge them if you aren't 1st). Honestly seemed a lot more useful to the person throwing the shell.
Also in Super Mario Kart blue shells weren't invented yet, so no worries there.

TBH I don't understand why they keep using the flying blue shell when something better already existed. I can kind of understand MKWii since that reused several assets from Double Dash, but there's no reason why it [I]still[/I] needs to be a pure rubber banding item that's almost worthless to the user. I guess they might've found it to be overpowered, but the thing is blue shells were much rarer in MK64 and Super Circuit.

The blue shell doesnt fly in 8 until it reaches the person in first place, it hits everyone in front of it (if they are in the middle of the track anyway) along the way to first, so it is a help to whoever got it.
My favorite experience as a kid was playing Mario Kart DS, right at the start I was in a bad place and got an item box, but in a split second I was first. (You know, it's the start of a race where places change so fast and you can get good items in first)
I got a blue shell, and was so far ahead in first at this point. Being a dumb kid I thought "MAYBE IT HITS THE PERSON IN SECOND INSTEAD"
Nope. Flys straight up, does it's little spin thing and comes back down on me
