He makes some good points, but the press in 1962 was much different than it is now.

Internet is becoming mainstream and news outlets choose to either get with the times or stay where they are and get paid even less. I feel like part of the reason why journalism today is filled with muckraking is because of how detrimental the next pay check is to most regular paid journalists.

If I recall correctly, it was gutted with no given reason. Even bringing it back wouldn't do enough. People would have to condition future generations to not stoop to our level.

If you got rid of the press, you get the advantages of moving in secret and doing all sorts of shit with the public in the dark, but the disadvantage is you don't get that chatroom. The press is to keep "the bastards honest" as we say down here, you need it for a functioning and stable democracy. Without the press, politicians would be in the dark with the public and the public would be in the dark about them. When you assume high and public office, you will get the brunt of what they say. Some positive some negative.
