I'm not sure why Remain didn't make more of an effort to debunk the ridiculous claims made by Leave. Instead of tacking those issues, they tried to highlight the benefits of being in the EU, many of which were not exactly enticing because we're all so familiar with them

There was plenty of debunking going on, but the leave side wasn't interested in hearing it. Any evidence you present could be dismissed, any experts/institutions that came out against the leave side were part of the big EU conspiracy and thus they could be ignored.
I live in the north of England, in a town with a very high middle-aged and elderly population.
The amount of people I spoke to who seemed to believe that the entire thing was to do with immigration and getting rid of foreigners, and voted leave for that reason alone, was staggering to me.
That and those with a horribly misplaced and archaic sense of patriotism.
