Got to play this when a local computer store held a 4v4 Oculus DK1 event, it was pretty neat. I often found myself lost in asteroid fields though, could be due to the DK1's lower res :v:
eve trying to be relevant in the new sea of space shooters.
Not really a big fan over some of those particle effects.
Sound design seems weird aswell, kind of sounds like you're outside the ship instead of inside it.

To be fair Valkyrie was announced a good bit ago and its something they've been playing with the idea of for a long while.
Yeah...
Also, has health and shield readings but every time the dude got hit he lost all shields and went to 25% health. The fuck is the point at that point.

It's almost as if it's in pre alpha and they'll have just whipped up some quick effects and sounds.

Pre alpha has lost all meaning to me.
would be cool if they could somehow integrate this into the full eve game. don't think there'd be any chance of that though

what new era of space shooters? theres like one space shooter thats relevant and thats elite dangerous
scam citizen doesnt count just yet

I haven't supported/don't play Star Citizen, but hasn't it had an arena based mode for months, along with the first version of its persistent universe thingy releasing a few weeks ago?
I might be wrong because it's got a weirdly confusing dev-cycle going on, but I'd say those being playable would be enough to call it "relevant".

not after the complete fucking disaster that was DUST 514, anyway
Why is it VR only though? Looks like it'd be just fine without VR

yeah its going into an open-test persistant universe phase pretty soon, currently in closed testing. it pretty much ties the FPS, ship, and walking around gameplay seamlessly, but it's having netcode issues as its biggest issue atm.
Still torn on this or the Vive. I have a feeling the oculus will be a huge letdown compared to the vive. Time will tell though

Well CCP wants to put EVE, Legion and Valkyrie in the same game somehow.
eve trying to be relevant in the new sea of space shooters.
Do you know how many people play EVE? they are still getting more and more subscribers.
Why is it VR only though? Looks like it'd be just fine without VR
Probably got some $$$ from Oculus.
Why is it VR only though? Looks like it'd be just fine without VR
The head-tracking is used as part of the missile lock-on system I think.
Still torn on this or the Vive. I have a feeling the oculus will be a huge letdown compared to the vive. Time will tell though
actually, both should be fairly comparable capability wise by the time the Vive releases. Oculus has plans for room-scale stuff like the Vive with its Touch controllers and optical tracking stations, but it is going to come out later in 2016 after the initial headset release.
The big question is going to be the capabilities of the optical tracking setup versus the lighthouse setup on the Vive, and the price of the Oculus+Touch+tracking equipment versus the cost of the Vive alone (which will come with the controllers and base stations).

Okay, why can't that be done with a mouse?
Okay, why can't that be done with a mouse?
because they said so
Oh oh wait
~immersion~
I mean, most reviewers have been really impressed with how natural valkyrie feels. That is probably just how space shooters will feel with VR, though. It seems like a pretty neat game though, and the scale of EvE means being the tiny little fighter among the big ships will be really cool. And the VR bit helps the scale feel even more "real"
i really hope we aren't getting to a phase where devs are gonna start pumping out games that require a 300 dollar peripheral to play
People said the same thing about math coprocessors.
And then GPUs
Then GPUs with 3D Acceleration
Such is the cycle of life.
i really hope we aren't getting to a phase where devs are gonna start pumping out games that require a 300 dollar peripheral to play
what does that even mean
like how else are games going to be made? Most games that require a VR headset physically cannot work with a traditional monitor.
[editline]10th December 2015[/editline]
yeah except i dont want to strap some shit onto my head to get some immersion, i prefer a monitor or tv screen
ok then dont buy VR games?
this applies to most other vr games as well
I cannot think of a single game designed specifically with VR in mind that would work with a trackIR, have any examples?
trackIR works fine for cockpit simulators (like Valkyrie, admittedly) but those are only a small subset of VR games, and most cockpit simulators that work with VR are originally mouse/keyboard games anyway (War Thunder, Elite: Dangerous, etc)
valkyrie has no reason to require VR other than to secure funding to be developed
There's no gameplay reason for VR only games to exist. Sure, there can be plenty of games which should really be played with VR -- plenty of great, non-VR games would be absolutely horrid to play on VR, and plenty of VR-only or VR-designed games would be pretty lackluster if not played with VR.
[editline]11th December 2015[/editline]
unless a game uses a lot of optical illusions specific to how vr could utilize that
that too
Why is it VR only though? Looks like it'd be just fine without VR
Because it's funded by Oculus and is currently the leading launch title for consumer VR? Without Oculus, Valkyrie wouldn't exist.
i really hope we aren't getting to a phase where devs are gonna start pumping out games that require a 300 dollar peripheral to play
Could say the same about 3D graphics cards back in the 1990s.
You're seriously underestimating how immersive consumer-grade VR is. It's not just about "turning your head :O", it's about being inside the game and fooling your subconscious to think it's real.
yeah except i dont want to strap some shit onto my head to get some immersion, i prefer a monitor or tv screen
literally everything done in this game could be accomplished by track ir or a similar webcam based solution
You're either trolling or dumb
[editline]10th December 2015[/editline]
That or you've never actually tried a consumer headset
yeah except i dont want to strap some shit onto my head to get some immersion, i prefer a monitor or tv screen
That sounds awfully close to old people talk.
yeah except i dont want to strap some shit onto my head to get some immersion, i prefer a monitor or tv screen
on the other hand, i want this to happen so hard i don't want to die before Full VR is the norm.
