Vector arcade games are actually pretty impressive to this day, the lines are so bright and crisp.
They put in a Asteroids game at the local barcade and it just looks so unique in comparison

It's not his fault really but these are JUUUSSSTT in detail enough where I keep wanting more info on the techniques used in some games and how they improved in later version.
I'm not a huge Ahoy fan in style, but his videos have fantastic production quality and attention to detail. Well scripted too.
ahoy is very good at putting things in to laymans

i love his animations too
Man, I remember Outcast (I didn't understand how to play it back then, though). It's absolutely gorgeous for being something from the 90's

Wow, that's something I haven't heard in a while.
this one felt a bit more unfocused. i dont blame him - must have been difficult to make, but i thought it was probably going to encompass a smaller time period. i mean he went from hl1 to hl2 in like one sentence. also surprised that xiii wasn't referenced during the little bit on stylised graphics - that was one of the best shooters of the era
I don't remember Need For Speed: Most Wanted looking as bad as that. Amazing how standards change so quickly.
true 3d graphics literally changed everything

Because it didn't look that bad. Even the PS2 version looked better. That looked like PC footage all on low for some reason. Look up some gameplay from it, and it looks much better even on consoles at the time.

The one thing I don't like about going back to older games.
I remember several games blowing my mind because of how real they looked.
First time I saw WWF Raw for the OG Xbox, I thought it was live action footage.

I thought something was up about the footage, Far Cry 1 looked atrocious in the video.

it looks atrocious in all videos
FC1 looks atrocious.
It didn't age well since it had very little style and mainly just tech behind it visually.
just like crysis
just like crysis
I think crysis has aged well. For two reasons, 1) It was so ahead of its time graphically, it's just now looking average to people. 2) it has nice assets, nice realistic lighting, and weapons that feel nice.
Even forgetting graphics FC1 does not *feel* good to play, it feels clunky an really uncomfortable compared to a modern shooter.
But that's just my take on it.
considering half life 2 and far cry came out the same year, wow
half life 2 looks about a million times better and still looks pretty good to this day (if you ask me)

valve is just an impressive gathering of people, wish they made new games more often

it has aged well in technical terms because it still does stuff that no dev in their right mind would bother with in terms of graphical fidelity
but it still looks like a boring tech demo to me. you can have all the 4k textures in the world but with bland art direction it doesn't really add up to much
I found it funny that he included a clip of Far Cry when he was talking about bloom, since Far Cry didn't actually have any bloom.
Holy fuck Far Cry really does look fucking atrocious in retrospect.

I usually agree with what you say regarding art and video games but crysis having no art direction? dude what
the alien designs were some of the if not the best alien designs I've seen in video games
half life 2 stands up well because it used firmly established previous-generation workflows and only incorporated a little bit of the later generation, while doom 3 / far cry / fear went headfirst experimenting with new technological capabilities and as a result suffered a lot in a series of compromises
[editline]20th November 2014[/editline]
crysis looks visually pleasing outdoors because the entire thing is an indulgence of visual noise. there is a LOT OF STUFF and to a lot of people that is impressive

or maybe because half life 2 had a cohesive art style and didnt try to be photorealistic in a time when it was impossible clearly
examples of recent video games that will hold up for the same reasons from this time in 10 years are infinite and human revolution, because they actually have an art direction

half life 2 is the most photorealistic out of the top contenders at the time. most of the assets are photographed and projected onto meshes with little authoring while most assets in doom 3 / far cry went through the entire (now current) generation's workflow of highpoly+lowpoly+bake+materials accounting for diffuse/specular. BECAUSE that (now current) workflow was very new and very experimental at the time the visuals of both FC and D3 suffered because they didn't really know how to utilize it yet. the artists of half life 2 were already very, very skilled at doing the same thing they had done since the previous generation
