The Ukrainian soldiers defended for a pretty long time considering the circumstances, heroes
Holy shit, that place is totally screwed.
Why does things have to be so terrible all the time?

It's sad that while they fought bravely, it all was to vain because as far as I can understand they only defended the airport because of its' symbolical significanse as the only territory Ukraine controls in Donbass.

The Ukrainian army actually holds more areas in Donbass than that airport and the fighting is still going on around the airport.
Some soldiers had to leave because the place was shelled so hard that there's almost no cover left, you don't want to be fighting in an open area.
the Ukrainian army is still holding some parts of the airfield the airfield.
Holy shit.
I really hope this war in Ukraine ends soon.
That's some Stalingrad shit right there.
You can see what it looked like before on Google maps/earth

it was brand new in 2011, built for some sporting event, now its beyond chernobyl levels of rubble
one has to wonder where the rebels are acquiring the thousands of mortars that rained down there, its not like that particular region would have thousands of mortar shells stockpiled in Donetsk
A real shame. This was before:

Strategically there is nothing left fighting for, I've heard reports that initially the Ukraine army entrenched themselves at the airport because they were afraid the rebels might station Russian Migs there, as it's the only real airport in rebel held territory. Now the only thing that's left is essentially a moonscape full of craters where neither side nor civilians can land a plane in the foreseeable future.
Shame to see a beacon of such interconnectivity of the human race and the triumphs of our civilisation in ruins like that. Really makes you think :(
Not sure if this is the proper place to report it, but theirs an offensive to take Debal'tseve and tons of the local populace are taking up arms and joining the Ukrainian forces, including several women.

Тhat takes some real balls to drive within range of RC signal and flying a drone above a more or less active warzone.
I would be worried either side captures me and interrogates me as a spy.

This sounds like a bad theory. If rebels wanted or could get russian air support they would use the Rostov-na-donu airport. 100 km makes no difference for migs.

Nobody says they will deploy air support in the current stage of the conflict, later on perhaps they might depending on how badly it will escalate.

Doesn't matter if it's true, it's the reason for the decision to hold the airport. It seemed reasonable to Ukrainian command.
Plus any military academy will tell you to hold airports. That's the default decision.

This is even worse when you realise that the whole complex was renovated in 2012 for $758 million.

Building things and bombing them to the ground seems to be how the world economy goes round.
Kind of curious to know what that song is.

I don't know, civilians joining combat is usually a bad idea. Lots of lives will be lost whether we like the thought of citizens defending their home or not
I don't know why but seeing all these Russians in these threads is pretty cool, you get a perspective that other places don't provide (Except /pol/)
