Yeah, that's right, just stand there a mere few hundreds yards from the massive pyroclastic cloud behind you...I'm sure if it suddenly decides to expand or the wind changes that you [i]won't[/i] be incinerated by the super-heated rock that's been not merely melted, but turned to VAPOR...

They really gotta be shit out of luck if the wind changed so quickly.
It could've also been a shield volcano who got its' vent filled with water. Hard to tell.
