Yep, agree completely. I would argue though that it's not being dropped because we've lost the reasons other than science for doing it but that it's because of a different other reason.
Maybe the US government wants to make the impression it's not spending money needlessly and although there are more practical ways, the space program is a very public way to show off having a good political effect but not being particularly practical. Also with private enterprise making their way into space, it's seen as a continuation of the US free market ideals and letting space be privatised while the government taking a step back to not get involved. There's lots of reasons for every action, including discontinuing the space shuttles.
