It's because the cardinal's mate is nesting close to where the window is so it tries to attack you or anybody else through the window. I used to have this problem for a couple weeks, also one day I was walking along a path and a bird started attacking me.
One time a crow took a hotgod right out of my hand at the Kennedy Space Center.
It left a scar with it's talons.
True story.
It looks alot like the bird form angry birds. Just sayin.

Probably because it's a cardinal, the red bird from angry birds
I love when birds do that. But not when they slam into the window and die.
A bird flew into the side of my truck once as I was driving along. It came up from behind, circled around, hit the front fender, and flew off.
We have a bird (A cardinal no less) that does this with our kitchen window. Just jumps at it/pecks it until someone gets close, then flies away.

Once a huge magpie got stuck into our homemade veranda and almost kill'd it self by flying repeatly against windows.
There were it's blood on the windows and the chairs at there.
After a while it landed down with it's mouth open and startet shaking.
I went and opened door for it and hapily it flied out from it and seemed to be okay.
