Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster - BBC documentary - every human should watch this at least once

Warning : these videos are disturbing, but in the most productive way.
Take note also that I believe that nuclear power, used safely (especially the new thorium breeder reactor designs), will be the salvation of humanity for at least a few hundred years until we can make fusion power widespread. This is not supposed to be an argument against nuclear power : more a warning against the horrors that scientific ignorance can cause.

If you, like me, were taught that the meltdown was caused purely by idiots in the control room and lack of safety measures, you may find the whole truth far more disturbing. This is a tale of tragedy, but also of greed, secrecy, and perhaps worst of all, denial.
If that one physicist, Valeri, hadn't been there to advise these horrifyingly ignorant politicians and businessmen on the true nature of the catastrophe, at least one million more people would have died, and untold millions more would have been affected by the radiation - and the bravery of the liquidator squads who KNEW they had to die for the good of their people is unparallelled.
I hope you people take something away from these videos, because they're well worth the watch.

Forgot to mention, these videos all have english-speaking actors. Personally, I think that it helps to empathise with these people more effectively, but your mileage may vary.
Why does it have to be so dramatized
Thanks, always been interested in Chernobyl.

Your mileage may vary. I personally thought it was utterly gripping and creepy.
I was trying to stave off those disturbing feelings at the start when I first watched it by saying "bah, this is kind of silly" (at some of the workers' personal lives being affected and stuff) but then I just got sucked in.

Also, keep watching, at least until they inform the plant owner guy about it (3.6 roentgens bit)
Nuclear power uses fission of a Uranium-235 atom (or if you have a CANDU reactor ie live in Canada it can also use Uranium-238) and not fusion.
Part 2 is missing.
Part 2 is missing.
Oops. Let me get right on that
Miss that old BBC splash screen.
Now its the circular one. :saddowns:
fucking fuckers fuck, why does every media tag break when you try to fix it in the OP >:C
Sorry, you guys are just going to have to click the last video and watch it on youtube

Yeah, I know. I didn't imply that fission power was fusion. At least I wasn't trying to...

That was what I was referring to.
That was what I was referring to.
Was it my use of the word nuclear? I meant nuclear fission.
That was what I was referring to.
He means that nuclear power is fine UNTIL WE GET FUSION POWER
I don't want too see this because I except horribly deformed humans.
Jesus, this is really depressing.
He means that nuclear power is fine UNTIL WE GET FUSION POWER
Oh, I thought he was using fusion power and nuclear power interchangeably.
My bad.
Jesus, this is really depressing.
Truly. Keep watching though.

Technically, fusion and fission power are both examples of nuclear power, since they both involve the nuclei of atoms.
I got a shot of nostalgia from that old BBC One bumper.
Truly. Keep watching though.

Technically, fusion and fission power are both examples of nuclear power, since they both involve the nuclei of atoms.
Nuclear power means it's using a nuclear chain reaction which can only be (feasibly) possible with nuclear fission happening constantly.
In todays sense, when we refer to nuclear power, we refer to nuclear fission chain reactions.
Really worth the watch
Even though it is popularized in STALKER, most people do not know the true face of it
I don't want too see this because I except horribly deformed humans.
Its about the disaster, not what follows years later. There's only burns.
Why are the people in the high seats always SUCH HUGE FUCKING IDIOTS?

Avatar is extremely apt

Not to shit on your parade or anything but none of them knew exactly what they were going into nor did they knew they were getting crazy amount of radiation.
Also fix the media tag for the last part.
Fun fact: I still can't eat certain self-picked mushrooms due to the fallout we had here in Europe.
Also fix the media tag for the last part.
If I do one again, I have to do them all again because of the way that media boxes show up as highlighted text when editing. :| I guess I can do it if you want, it does look kind of shit
You mean it's parsing as URL? Disable it when you edit.
oh my god now they're even worse
FFS WHY
okay now they're properly fixed
don't say another word about media tags
:saddowns: sums up my whole viewing experience
Watched the whole thing. Very interesting.
