Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster - BBC documentary - every human should watch this at least once - General

Warning : these videos are disturbing, but in the most productive way. Take note also that I believe that nuclear power, used safely (especially the new thorium breeder reactor designs), will be the salvation of humanity for at least a few hundred years until we can make fusion power widespread. This is a tale of tragedy, but also of greed, secrecy, and perhaps worst of all, denial. If that one physicist, Valeri, hadn't been there to advise these horrifyingly ignorant politicians and businessmen on the true nature of the catastrophe, at least one million more people would have died, and untold millions more would have been affected by the radiation - and the bravery of the liquidator squads who KNEW they had to die for the good of their people is unparallelled. Personally, I think that it helps to empathise with these people more effectively, but your mileage may vary.

Nuclear power uses fission of a Uranium-235 atom (or if you have a CANDU reactor ie live in Canada it can also use Uranium-238) and not fusion.

In todays sense, when we refer to nuclear power, we refer to nuclear fission chain reactions.
