It's just the normal link, they post a code once every hour or so that's only valid for the hour. If you vote, even following a link from /v/, without using the code your votes don't count. They know where you're coming from the same way every website knows where you're coming from, they (probably) use the HTTP referrer. When you click a link to a web page your browser tells the website you're going to what website you're coming from.

It's meant to showcase their toxic and cynical view towards vidya, and not the relatively more normal opinion of places like Facepunch and Reddit.
