Play in release order, you can skip Metal Gear 1 & 2 (Not Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2, they're mandatory), skip Portable Ops, but you have to play Peace Walker.
MGS3 and PW are the most related to the plot in terms of characters, but the plot going on relates a lot to the plan that unfolds over the entire series, mainly with the patriots.
MGS never ceases to amaze me, probably the only thing I can really say is my favorite ever, Kojima you beautiful man

He certainly went out with a bang.
Not expecting any other Metal Gear game from Konami to ever even come close to this, seeing how they fired Kojima.
It also sounds a bit like a betrayal to buy a game that formerly beared his "mark". I know that sounds nitpicky and as blind fanboy level, but I seriously don't expect Konami to make anything else remotely ok with the franchise.
It gets worse when Kojima seems to have designed TPP as the very end of all character's arcs.
I really hope this ties them all together, makes me sad if this is the last one.

[sp]Zombies, super zombies, super soldiers, REX, Skullface in masquerade mask (I still want to believe he fools Big Boss with it to trust him), Big Boss shrapnel growing to impossible lenghts, fiery Volgin, Paz?, homing shrapnel wave, people using french words and talking about languages.[/sp]

I want to say Skullface isn't real, and it's just BB's subconscious, but Ground Zeroes sort of contradicts that. BUT
