I got my arm caught in a subway door once, the edges were all padded so it didn't hurt at all. I don't know how much the strength and padding on those doors varies though.

Most door mechanisms have an auto-stop if it hits something, similar to an elevator. Plus, as SamPerson mentioned, there were pads of some sort. If the subway is usually that crowded, I'm 99% sure there are safety measures in place to prevent accidents, including not allowing the train to go if all doors are not shut completely.
