In 1961 Dad enslisted in the Marine Corps and was issued this M1 Garand. A Springfield Armory M1 Serial Number 1380819. Dad has been looking for it for over 50 years. I found it and purchased it from the Civilian Marksmanship Program in secret. It was a One in Six Millon chance to find it. I found it only fitting that a U.S. Marine should give it back to Dad. I love you Dad.
Was the M1 Garand still in service during the start of the Vietnam war? I thought it got replaced by the M14 variant back in the 1950s.
Or is this a ceremonial rifle?

At the very start of the Vietnam war the M1 was getting phased out of normal service, but it still served in sniper variants up to the 1970s
And damn if it isn't a hell of a rifle.
God that would be so amazing
Beautiful rifle, the M1 Garand is on my list of firearms to own in my lifetime.

Can you imagine the memories that came rushing back just holding that gun again?

Honestly? Probably both.

Regardless of your opinions on guns, everyone occasionally loves a good gun.
"Ohhh, sorry, mine was actually 1380820!"
That's awesome
I held my breath when the dude walked through the door, it looks like the barrel barely made it past the doorway :v:

This is the Marine Corps we are talking about here. They got issued 1903's in world war II. They always got really old equipment.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. But seriously, my dad and his friends have a few M1's and they are amazing rifles if you ever get to shoot one.
That's a great present, and he looks so happy it's heart warming.
I wish we could see the rest of the video.
When he picks it up and is in utter disbelief, and says 50 years. Damn man, damn.

It's not that. It's more of they can't afford anything even though they do most of the work and if they can afford something, they usually are issued left overs.
Full metal Jacket anyone?
This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of my enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
boy was that video cringeworthy
Reminds me of that picture with the russian WW2 vet who found his tank displayed as a memorial at some park.

The Rifleman's Creed existed before Full Metal Jacket.
