I expected a NES/Atari ~nostalgia~ circle jerk was pleasantly surprised.
I feel like the best generation of gaming was probably the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox1 era. I feel like that's when gaming started to really come into its own as a legitimate art form.

The same held true between the PS1 and N64, and so forth; it's less console capabilities now and more of having to conform to general or publisher demands to make sure your title isn't a commercial flop. More production costs equals needing to make more of a profit to even up, and thinking out of the box is time and time again, for non-indie devs at least, shown to just not attract enough publicity or attention to sell enough. Hell, I remember how Halo was the 'big thing' everyone hated before Modern Warfare caused the shitstorm, with sci-fi games all over trying to be the Halo Killer like the classic Killzone, or Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter.

Companies should continue to innovate as long as they're not actually LOSING profit. People shouldn't lose sight of what they set out intending to do.
the golden age of gaming is whenever ocarina of time came out
the golden age of gaming is whenever ocarina of time came out
Golden age of Gaming was whenever you were 10. Case closed.
Just you guys wait until the kids these days are going to be saying the golden age is when Call of Duty 10 came out.
Golden age of Gaming was whenever you were 10. Case closed.
But i've played video games since i was 3
Around the year 2000 was the best era.
I think it's all a little daft to say year XXXX was the best year for games. You get good games and you get shit games. The ratio may differ from year to year, but it's still true.
nah it's all nostalgia there are people who say that the atari 2600 era was the golden age, and in a decade you'll have people saying this gen was the golden age i don't really care i think they all suck
How did this thread turn from a guy making fun of nostalgia blindless to nostalgia blindness :v: Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time were great games but let's be serious guys they were the greatest games that will ever be made for the rest of time
Wow, that guy's accent is so THICK
Saying the golden age of gaming has already happened is like a person in the 1940's claiming that the silent film era was the golden age of cinema.
That look on his face when he realized all those old games really weren't as great as he remembered :(
nah it's all nostalgia there are people who say that the atari 2600 era was the golden age, and in a decade you'll have people saying this gen was the golden age i don't really care i think they all suck
Actually, I think people will remember this "era" as rather bad. I mean, the shit some Publishers are pulling is beyond stupid.
Actually, I think people will remember this "era" as rather bad. I mean, the shit some Publishers are pulling is beyond stupid.
Publishers have always pulled stupid shit, but the vast majority of games from today will be either forgotten or viewed through rose tinted goggles 20 years from now.
Actually, I think people will remember this "era" as rather bad. I mean, the shit some Publishers are pulling is beyond stupid.
Nobody remembered the NES by all the awful product placement games or half-assed poorly made games. I doubt people will remember this era by its awful games.
I wish I was born ealier. Among me there's stupid CoD players in my class and they have never played Zelda, Tetris, Pacman etc. It actully hurts my feelings.
Isn't this the guy from Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe?
I remember that guy from Adventure call if i'm right. Found it for anyone that wants to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfKhDiUNOG0
Oh fuck I remember adventure call, good times.
I don't think you can really say there's a "golden age" of anything. Movies, music, literature, gaming, etc. Ever since that thing has existed, there have been good and bad parts of it, and as long as it exists good and bad things will continue to be made.
-snip-
The past generation of games will always seem the best. They seemed great while you played them because, and lets be honest here, you were stupid. Everybody is stupid as a kid. You, me, and everyone else. Therefore, games simply seemed more appealing as you weren't as critical of them as you are when you're older. Plus, the added nostalgia makes everything seem better. Truth be told, there is no true "Golden Age" of anything in the entertainment industry. There are ups and downs, sure, but never a singular time where it was at it's best.
My personal favorite year in gaming was 07 but after that it feels like it all went to shit. Its when gaming started catering to a new audience of casual players. I wouldn't say their is a golden age but I definitely don't like where we are now.
the golden age of gaming is whenever ocarina of time came out
so once every five years since the mid-90's.
For anyone who wants to know: this is from a show on BBC Scotland called Limmy's Show.
I remember Limmy did a skit or something where it was a call-in adventure thing. Was truly hilarious.
