It usually is a serious show, but there are some comic relief episodes. I recommend "Bad Blood" (S05E12) from the original series, it's one of the best!

Yea its usually pretty serious and coherent (with 98/100 not being up its own ass). But there's some good funny episodes, aforementioned S5E12 as well as Jose Chung's From Outer Space which is a bit of a parody of the show itself.
