Police used to do a lot of stuff like this to diffuse arguments and domestics. Give the husband a water gun, then the wife. One officer goes into the kitchen and just makes himself something to eat. Stuff like that
Can't really do that now. Now days it's all If one of you can't leave we have to take you. Too many times the domestic turns into an assault or murder after the police left
