I can relate to this. I spent days on this fight on merely "hard" difficulty. (Footage is from Revengeance difficulty. Two steps above hard.) Sam's unconventional moveset, (Many of your moves require chargeup to be remotely effective. Obviously with how fast Armstrong attacks it's very hard to get openings to use them. You can also taunt which increases damage done to him, but also makes him attack faster AND you now take damage when blocking.) having to watch that freaking cutscene after every retry, fighting a familiar boss with entirely different attacks, (Some of them come out VERY quickly and can even be cancelled mid-attack into different attacks.) certain moves always resulting in a counter-attack, etc. just make this in my opinion the most frustrating battle in the entire game. EDIT: That's NOT VR training. For the "Fireball" attack, dodging to the side often leaves you still getting hit. You have to dodge forward, using the invincibility frames to go "Through" the attack. Not something that's never been seen before in a hack n' slash, but it's confusing.
I remember just being able to jump dash in the air to doge his fireball attack.
I remember just being able to jump dash in the air to doge his fireball attack.
I wonder if that gives you I-frames like the normal dodge does. I never really found a use for the air-dash aside for getting certain secrets.
The 10 second stretches of Armstrong on fire, screaming, and charging, alongside Sam furiously cartwheeling sums up this fight pretty nicely.
Chalk this up with "Games That Require Spare Controllers".
Armstrong's "HUAAAAHHH" gets me every time
Armstrong's "HUAAAAHHH" gets me every time
I'LL KNOCK YOU OUT! *THUNK!* AWOOP! Freaking headbutt is 5 times as annoying as Ocelot's headbutt in MGS4. God help you if he uses the fire"wall" to block you into a corner (the towers of flame home in on you) and then he starts spamming grabs/headbutts. They're unblockable and you have to try and phase through them with the dodge's i-frames. He can also cancel them into even more grabs.
What the fuck? I loved this game, and I didn't even know it had DLC. Well shit, guess it's time to play MGR again.
Perfectly highlights why I think it's boring when higher difficulty means more oneshots. The slightest touch is a return to checkpoint button, no interesting or close moments, you just 100% it or nothing at all. It becomes a requirement rather than an achievement and for whatever reasons it makes it almost meaningless to me. Although granted Sam's taunt increases the target's damage but it's basically increasing damage onto what is already a one shot. Not to discourage anyone who wants to try MGR though, it's an amazingly fun game, and if you do happen to like oneshots galore, there's a difficulty for it.
I'm pretty sure I learned Raiden to the point of being able to finish bosses without taking damage even on hard. I tried Sam in the DLC which was pretty hard on normal difficulty. Then I got to Armstrong and I had to play on easy to beat him. Sam's moveset just wasn't for me.
Personally for me the most difficult attack Armstrong has is the jet clothesline. It tracks way too much, and does some 180 bullshit turns.

I remember doing this on fucking revengeance, he would do that gay fucking clothesline swipe, where he starts picking up speed, and he would just keep moving around the arena, picking up more and more speed until he was faster than the game would allow me to dodge his attack, inevitably getting hit by it. You can't block that attack either
I haven't beat the dual GRAD fight on revengeance. That fight really is bullshit because it's not that there's two of them, it's that the arena is covered with explosives you have to get past and when they got shot, they deal a lot of damage and it knocks you down which gives the GRAD plenty of time to boost over to you and kill you in one hit [editline]7th February 2018[/editline] I actually prefer the one hit kills on revengeance difficulty. It saves me the effort of pausing the game and restarting from the last checkpoint to get S-rank

He's much simpler, but there's elegance in simplicity. [editline]7th February 2018[/editline] Fighting Armstrong as Sam is also much more fun than as Raiden, though that's largely because getting to his final phase requires getting through the bullshit second phase, where you can't get hit at all for 2.5 minutes, otherwise you have dodge around for another 2.5 minutes. I actually made a save file explicitly on his third phase and never finish it because I like booting up MGR to fight Armstrong.

The best part about Sam's Armstrong fight is how Armstrong's flare blitz charge can get stuck on the edge of the arena and he'll just zip around the ring while building up speed and then graze your elbow at fucking Warp 9 I just love when that happens The achievement you get for beating this fight without taking damage on the highest difficulty is one of the only achievements I've ever actually been proud of.
For how bullshit this fight was, it was still a ton of fun. Watching that is making me want to do another revengeance playthrough.
AWOOP
Is it possible to play Sam in the single player yet?

His moves were simplistic but that just made blade canceling (Tapping Blade Mode to reset a combo) even more fun. Also the final boss fight of his campaign was great, especially the music.

They changed the gameplay up enough to make them new, even if they reused areas and enemies. Bladewolf focuses more on stalking and singling out enemies, Sam focuses on "u mad?" tactics and his charge attack system feels genuinely good. MG: R is really a great game all in all. But holy shit I just cannot keep up on the higher difficulties. Once you hit Very Hard and the enemies stop taking turns things get real, fast.
What the fuck? I loved this game, and I didn't even know it had DLC. Well shit, guess it's time to play MGR again.
If you have the PC version all of them are free.
If you have the PC version all of them are free.
they're all free on consoles too except for the VR challenges expansion. PC version is a great port though and goes on sale a lot so he should probably still go for it though if he doesn't already have it.
