Oh shit, I've actually suggested this in their MGS2 video. That's a big surprise.
That PS1 version of Quake 2 is some real magic right there.
No idea what they did to get it running so poorly on the PII machine, I've got a PII @ 333Mhz + Nvidia TNT2 machine that's capable of running it at 40-60FPS at 800x600 with full color lighting and everything, no problem.
Edit: Oh, the TNT2 came out two years after the first Voodoo, nevermind

I think it was the first 'first person shooter' I played. Never had the pc to play it, so the ps1 version was the only version I knew.
Oh my gosh that Quake 2 Expo 2016 looks goddamn beautiful.
I guess I know what I'm playing for the next few days.
The PS1 version's control scheme while odd today, made some sense at the time. In fact, I was so used to it, I used the same control scheme in Halo for Xbox.

it would look infinitely better without all those specular highlights. it looks like crappy CGI from 1988

I have it, and just as mentioned in the video, the controls are kind of bad.
But yeah, everything else about it is pretty good!
Oh this brings back memories. Quake II was one of the first shooters I ever got to play when I was a kid. I'm glad there's still some interest in it, which has helped it age remarkably well!
Got to love Quake honestly even though it didn't shine like the original Quake I remember the days of bringing my old PC to friends houses and having LAN parties those right there were the best days of PC gaming in my opinion now days its all about online and what not... Boy do I miss the early 90's :frown:

I personally can't stand any HD mods for old games, they invariably look like complete garbage since it's just piling more and more filters and unfitting textures onto the base game with no direction
It's the same problem a lot of modern "retro" games have, where all they've done is make the textures a shit resolution and shaved a bunch of polys off the models

I personally think low detail envrionments with super detailed textures slapped onto them look extremely weird

I couldn't really give much of a damn about the textures, honestly.
It's more the lighting and shader improvements that make it amazing, in my opinion.

At least, I personally think it looks a whole lot nicer. My only real criticism is that they went pretty crazy with the bumpmaps, especially on the weapons. Gives everything a sort of Doom 3 look - though, ironically, I think Q2XP2016 looks better than Doom 3 does. :v:

I feel like it changes the artstyle a little too much. Much brighter than it should be imo.
if there's a version of Quake 2 XP with just the shadows and more colorful lighting i'd be all over that, it's just all the assets that are terrible

To each their own.
I personally prefer the wider range of lighting and color that Q2XP provides. I was never a fan of the grungy, muted palette of the original.

I just tested this, and you can achieve this by renaming the q2xpTex0.pkx to q2xpTex0.pkx.old.
Weapons still have bumpmaps, but everything else seems to be reverted. I'm sure there's other packs you can fiddle with to get the textures back wholly, and I'm sure there are settings you can tinker with to get the game dark and grungy again, too.

The Q2XP grenade launcher has entirely new textures for some reason and weapons like the Blaster and Shotgun have additional effects, and the items certainly got new models or textures in some regards while others haven't. It's like they were planning a graphical overhaul but only did it partially since there's many low-res textures with bumpmaps and highlights placed ontop to look better alongside higher-res ones. Berserker Quake 2 does a lot of the same shit, an incomplete graphical enhancement but even more inconsistent and with new models that don't fit whatsoever.
Hell, I tried Berserker Quake 2 yesterday and for no good reason the Machinegun's swapped with an M4 rifle and an EoTech sight that has a picture of a jet fighter's cockpit view and HUD in there for no logical reason. And yet they couldn't be assed to make the world model also show as the 3D model on the hud selection.
Meanwhile I play with all the texture filtering disabled :v:
Grew up playing in software mode, the hardware smoothing always looked wrong to me

Also for some reason that comparison screenshot is stupidly dark, it doesn't look like that unless you crank your brightness way too low

I don't mind the texture filtering apart from on sprites, so I find it fine to use in Quake 2, but something like DooM where it's mostly sprites I don't use the texture filtering
I never knew that that awful wobble effect was a result of interpolation messing with vertex animation but that kinda makes me love it more :v:
Hyperblaster in Quake 2, Is a thing of real beauty.
Maybe it's because it spins?

Textures need to equal level geometry. You can't put HD textures on a blocky map like that, it will just look worse. That's the reason I play games like DOOM in it's original resolution. I rather have everything pixelated equally than crisp 1080p brush edges with terribly unfitting sprites.
