Overall, I don't think the shitstorm they caused with this was worth it...
Day one mod for me.
i don't remember the banjo games sounding that obnoxious lol
thats a lot of ECH
Have someone replace it with JonTron's political statements.
already done

there's usually some kind of background music that accompanies it but also in BK when you held the skip button the text didn't crawl so slowly. doing so makes the talking noise quieter as well so it's a double feature.

That's an absolute masterpiece.

Also lower quality samples. Higher frequencies were cut off so it wasn't as harsh even not sped up.
Based on this video, Jon's voice is far better than average compared to others.
I'm actually really happy I got to hear this and it's exactly how I imagined
i don't remember the banjo games sounding that obnoxious lol
I remember reading Jim's review thinking "what, how does he not like the Banjo style voices" but then I heard this as well as some gameplay videos. It's much harsher than BK was. I can see it getting annoying.
From what I've heard, I don't mind the voices. It is much harsher sounding than B-K, but not in a way to where I feel like it's going to grate on me.
Also, I sort of like Jon's performance better than his replacement. The replacement just sounds like they took a voice sample that's already there and just pitch shifted it.

Jon sounds funny in this, but good lord the lizard guy sounds fucking irritating..
Man, I gotta agree that the way they tried to replicate banjo's sounds just came out very obnoxious.

It sounds a lot more subtle in Banjo

It's kinda hard to explain, but the original banjo's way of doing voice sets sounds charming in a way, it sorta adds personality to the character and it doesn't grow to be really obnoxious in the long run.
Yooka-Laylee's voice sets honestly sounds like the developers just added it in because they want to emulate the old Rare games, but not emulate what they added in, which is charm and personality on the characters. It's like they just added it because they needed to.

imo it sounds like its just the "fuzziness" of the "low quality audio"
imo it sounds like its just the "fuzziness" of the "low quality audio"
No, it's not how low quality it sounds or how restrictive it is, it's the way it was done and implemented.

that low quality sound really takes the edge off tho and it makes a difference

also for sound design, its easy to go too far and take it from goofy to obnoxious. idk if playtonic is aware of that

In Banjo-Kazooie they make it sound like a somewhat coherent and seamless voice. Kazooie works especially well.
In Yooka-Laylee the samples are played too slowly and don't seem to blend into eachother. The samples themselves are also really irritating.
it's basically "rarrorarra rorerraro" VS "HUH. GAH. HOHH. GHUH."
I also like how in Banjo Kazooie they used sound effects as voices too. Like how the feathers made flute sounds, for example.
Main issue is the attacks are too harsh, but even then, the style is annoying enough as is. Would have preferred either actual voices or subtle "hmm's" and other grunts.
I would return the game so fast if i had to listen to that annoying ass shit throughout the whole game. Did they really think hearing either of those voices was appealing? Please tell me that its different
I also like how in Banjo Kazooie they used sound effects as voices too. Like how the feathers made flute sounds, for example.
eeeeeeehhh the feather was my least favorite one, because it was playing notes, rather than random sounds, so it just sounded like a very dissident song
Ohh, I stopped breathing for a moment from that video. Still, funny that JonTron got the Port-a-Potty (aka Port-a-Jon) of all things.
The problem with the voice is a mix of both. The sound is just obnoxious, with the way they delivered the voices. I get that they're trying to emulate like a lizard, but making it sound like it's choking or something is probably not the best way to make that sound. And Jon's was obnoxious too.
One of the bigger problems though is that you can tell it's just a guy making noises mashed randomly together. And I know that is, literally what it is, but the thing is you can sort of hear it cut, and the pauses are just a bit too long. I dunno how to describe it. I know it's not nostalgia cause I never played banjo and that sounds right to me where this does not.
It feels like if this was in Banjo Kazooie, the sound this character would make is like toilet sounds, like flushing or door slamming. Jon would make more sense if he voiced humanoid character.
funny thing is, i learned from grant kirkhope sharing with jon and arin on gamegrumps the secrets to the voices, namely
1. they were chopped up from full sentences or longer sounds. mumbo's full sentence is "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough."
2. many voices were just pitch shifted versions of others.
so the production of these voices in yookalaylee serve a few problems. they're not only trying to emulate something incorrectly, but they're trying to emulate something that partly got done through pure hardware limitation. and through limitation, we got something very good... like the rest of banjo-kazooie. through the emulation of something without understanding why it was the way it was, we got something poorly done, ala yookalaylee.
and despite the fact that grant knew this they still couldn't get it right.
shame.
Haha port-a-jonTRON
