It's not about whether it was funny or not, it's just the way he said it combined with the non reaction from the crowd. His laugh seriously reminded me of Tommy Wiseau's.

They did actually laugh. Kimmell did too. He's doesn't have a serious face while Ted is chuckling. I split-screened two separate clips for that.
But did you really find the joke itself funny? I see it as trying so hard to be witty, it's almost a desperate attempt. The humor is in the irony of the attempted joke. It's essentially a Freudian slip.
But even then, I don't laugh, I just cringe.
No one ever refers to a serial killer as a serial. Ever. Even if the topic is serial killers.
It's pretty disturbing that Ted tried to spin the question into that. I'm no psychologist, but I'd say Ted has killed at least 3 people in his life, and perhaps even mutilated or defiled the corpses.

I thought it was funny, and thought the reaction was going to be full blown laughter, but instead I got a disappointing crowd reaction.
