The idea was probably to package it with other apps.
There's not a lot to the malware itself. Think of it as being on the efficiency level of phishing scams- not many people will fall for it, but the occasional dumb person will stumble over a program like Elite, download it for whatever reason and realize they've screwed up.
Like with malware you might pick up on things like Skype, this kind of malware will infect you, try to find anything useful from your system like credit card information, then use your relevant messaging platform to try and spread to your friends and repeat the whole process.
But again, think of it as being on par with phishing scams. The guy who made it probably doesn't expect many, if any, infections to happen, especially not after regular antiviruses classify it. It's just out there to potentially hook someone dumb enough to leave their system and purchasing info unprotected.
