The placebo effect is that strong. I've had to read a lot about the effect and have also read stories of people experiencing these types of healings.
Right after the process they will have lost all their pain and suffering, but it's only temporary. When they get home or even so soon as leave the gathering the pain will be back and can actually bring forth quite a lot of psychological suffering as well.
Though I must say that it is very unethical to solely use alternative medicine when treating a physical illness. A combination between the two can have a significant effect on a persons recovery.
The fun thing about placebo is that it actually works even when you know it's a placebo. Not as good as when you don't but it's still significant.
All of those people would be in a mental institution, but since they claim religion, it's 'normal'

Adrenaline is also acts like a painkiller. I remember awhile back someone posted a documentary on this in which a guy "healed" random individuals on the street who actually claimed their pain had gone, then he explained that he had not really done anything and that it was all in their head.

generally not plants. it's a combination of placebo and the fact that when you are in the situation you get super excited and get a burst of adrenaline which actually will make the pain temporarily fade.
