I don't understand the 'amp or not amp' of new consoles. Whether people like them or not, won't all games eventually transition over to the next generation? And if so, wouldn't that infer more or less that unless you don't want to play new games, stick to old console? I always figured hype was devoted more towards games themselves than a single console, no matter how impressive or underwhelming.
I actually ended up watching all of this, pretty good.
The xbox 360 looked the current generation when that came out. Its like saying the 360 looks bad because Quake 4 looks bad.
the guy is acting like previous generations WEREN'T like this. when the PS3 came out games looked almost exactly like PS2 games when Xbox 360 came out games looked almost exactly like the original Xbox games why did this guy think this gen would be different? You have to wait for developers to squeeze as much juice out of the technology as possible, as seen with the PS3 and 360 half a fuckin decade after they were launched, look at Uncharted 3, or Gears of War 3, they look really good, but why did it take them so long to get that visual.. "umph" out of the systems? Because they had to optimize and optimize and learn the hardware and work around their limitations. Developers don't suddenly know everything about the hardware they work with the second they are given a developer kit
Uncharted Drake's Fortune came out really early in the PS3's life cycle and it looked fucking amazing, so you still have those killer launch games to look forward to too! I can only hope that they focus more on splitscreen couch gaming this upcoming generation or else PC is just gonna take over especially with steam's Big Picture
the guy is acting like previous generations WEREN'T like this. when the PS3 came out games looked almost exactly like PS2 games when Xbox 360 came out games looked almost exactly like the original Xbox games
Actually he did say this.
i agree with a lot of the stuff he said but i doubt that the bland looking games is ps4's fault, i also like how he called the devs out on their shady practices and the fact that games barely last as long as they are worth anymore, so you need to buy them when they dont cost as much
He says games won't look much better, and I agree and disagree. You go boot up MGS4 and cutscenes run at like really low framerate and look pretty shitty up close due to low resolution. Because of hardware limitations. Here we up that, so games can not necessarily look better (fuck yeah hi res textures) but most importantly run better. We won't have to deal with framerate drops and sub par framerate in general with the new PS4. Yeah they won't be to overly advanced other than textures, but the important part is that they will (probably) run at 1080p and AT LEAST 30 frames a second constant, hopefully 60 frames. I am hyped for real 1080p better framerate, because games won't really get too overly "photorealistic" because of price to develop. Of course launch titles at announcement aren't gonna be the best thing ever. When E3 comes around is when we will see the full stuff. Of course they are going to show cinimatic trailers when they are first announced and not going to release for who knows how long. It's not that they are trying to hide the game because "OH GOD MAN IT'S SHIT BUT WE GOTTA SHOW IT ANYWAY", it's that they don't have enough game to show. So they use a cinimatic and maybe pre rendered video to show it off. It's not to show what the PS4 will do with these games, it's to show the games. You have the unreal engine trailer for that. The reason you can't just download a PSN game on PS4 is that it wasn't designed for PS4. Just like you can't put a PS2 game into PS3s anymore. It's lacking the physical component to make it work and they have to port it over to make it playable on the PS3. It's not that they don't want to make everything carry over because that would be a selling point, it's that they can't. Games take quite a while to download on peoples internet speeds. It's not 20 minutes you fuck. Anything over 20 GB takes over 20 minutes to download on a 5 MPBS steam download. Plus increased file sized when next gen games come out. So playing games while they download? Hell fucking yeah.
Early PS2 game (Jak and Daxter): Late PS2 game (Jak 3): [t]http://i.imgur.com/rCREGdu.jpg[/t] Give the devs time to learn their new ride.
He talks about next gen games being more expensive develop when we've been making next gen games whole time anyway. i.e.: When a game is ported to xbox the textures get downscaled to run smoothly, they weren't that resolution to begin with.
It's not like devs don't know x86/AMD platforms.
Of course they do, they develop on PCs, but we're talking about a very specific, locked-down implementation. It's like buying a new car even after having a few. You know the basics, but it'll take a bit before you nail down how that specific car will handle.
But there's also launch titles that just serve as tech demos as well. Like Motorstorm for PS3
I feel like the huge rise of Indie games in the past several years has been a reaction to these ideas.
His point about Walking Dead is perfect.
While I'm kinda on edge on his point about graphics I do think most of his other points are pretty damn valid. Like how the consoles are becoming more like social networking devices.
Holy shit that was depressing. Every year there are less and less games that I look forward to. It's all down to Kerbal Space Program at the moment, and maybe arma in the future. Pretty soon I'll just stop gaming, and then I'll have to make friends and shit.
I don't care about bloody graphics all I want is tech that makes it so that dead body over there doesn't disappear after I make more dead bodies.(Can be applied to other objects)

This guy is fucking retarded. First off, Crysis was originally made for the PC while future proofing itself so it'd be relevant for years to come. Then it was ported over using CryEngine 2 but dumbed down significantly. I also hate how he's using icenhancer as a comparison for Watch_Dogs. If you don't know, icenhancer is a ENB-series graphics preset and as seen in many other games such as Mafia 2 and Skyrim, it can make games look amazing but the fact still remains that all those nice looking filters are relying on a hacked binary file injecting post-processing effects up the ass. Could Bethesda made Skyrim look like that themselves? Definitely but would anyone be able to run it and most importantly, would their console equivalents be able to run it? Fuck no. Go look at the system specs for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. They both have 256mbs of memory and while this guy may say "oh well it isn't running a bloated operating system like Windows or Linux so it doesn't need memory", go ask CryTek what they think about that statement. If I recall, Epic's developers actually had to overcome issue after issue trying to get the game to even become playable while retaining similar features to the PC version, probably resulting in the end product being dumbed down like many other games have ended up doing. Also this kid complaining about how it's going to be based on the same X86 architecture that the rest of the world uses says it all. The current console generation has lived far too long a nd developers have slightly managed to get away with only using 256mb of memory in their games but it's getting to the point where that's becoming impossible.

gotta love these videos that give me a ten-point guide on why I shouldn't be excited for things I'm excited about.
These tech demo video's look really nice and all but i sorta doubt we will see anything like that anytime soon unless its something like Lair. Though i'm still pretty excited about this.
Yeah, the stuff he says about graphics is off the mark but I feel almost everything else he's saying ring true. Last gen got pretty annoying for a lot of reasons and it doesn't look like Sony's taking the right steps to improve it. I'm just waiting to see Microsoft's entry into the next gen. This is make or break time. They have the benefit of going last this time, so they could easily one-up Nintendo and Sony's mistakes. But unless they change how they've handled Xbox 360 in the last couple years, I really can't see them improving the situation with their existing philosophy. It's gonna take some strong exclusives to get me to buy into the next Xbox (and likewise to PS4). Bottom line is that I just wanna play fucking video games. Maybe that makes me old. Maybe that makes me outdated. But I really don't see how total social networking saturation and motion controls are improving my gaming experience on these gaming consoles. The only video game that caught my interest for the whole Sony conference was Watch_Dogs, and I'll be getting that on PC if anything. I wasn't a big PC gamer as a kid, but I've been sticking to it more and more as an adult and it looks like that trend might continue.
my friend is keep trying to tell me that consoles make the games and want that I buy right now a ps3 for the full price. yeah sure, it's like they plug a keyboard into a ps3 and just write the game. I'm pretty sure that pc gaming will be the next console thanks to steam big picture and stuff. I'd never buy another console again unless it's proven to be worth it, which I doubt will ever happen.

I'll admit I jumped on Wii and DS quickly partially out of childhood fanboyism, but in my opinion both of those consoles churned out some great titles. DS especially. (It's not like Wii costed an arm and a leg like the other two did anyway.) I received a Wii U as a gift from a great friend, but I honestly wouldn't have bought it otherwise - it's in an awful dry spell right now. I haven't touched it in literal months. And yeah, I have hopes that 'Steam Box' will actually make an impact. At least to drive the big three consoles into more of a PC mentality with less awful restrictions and more convenient service.
Basically the computing power of the PS4 has been around for years, but game devs haven't been creating games that utilize that technology. Now that something like the PS4/Xbox720 is becoming more relevant, the devs will start creating games that actually do things to equal the computing power. It's all on the devs, hopefully they take their time and give us something great. He is right about the games taking longer to make and costing more to make now-a-days.
I don't see gameplay getting better with next gen consoles. I'm betting they will just focus on graphics even more.
