Umpire ends the game after getting deliberately hit

situation:
The initial pitch was a ball, missing the strike zone because it was low. The angle of the camera from behind and slightly above makes it difficult to see this. Spectators behind the umpire and catcher also don't have the best view of this and are wrongfully claiming the pitch was a strike. Additionally, fans and players will often argue even when they know they are wrong, mostly to attempt to sway the umpire towards giving them more favorable calls in the long run.
After the pitch results in a walk (rewarding the batter with 1st base freely), the team calls timeout (which goes on waaaaay too long). I'm surprised the umpires didn't break that up sooner. On resuming play, the pitcher throws a pitch and the catcher intentionally moves out of the way so that the umpire will be hit.
The umpires then decide to call off the game, resulting in a forfeit loss for the fielding team, probably under an unsportsman-like conduct rule.
aftermath:
The pitcher, catcher, and coach were ejected, and their team wasn't allowed to participate in the final two events of the season. The regulating body also met with the coach, and it's possible he faced additional punishments or sanctions that weren't announced.
Reminds me of my days of travel hockey!!
I hope the butthurt was worth it :~)
now you've lost the season
Those parents. They need to learn how to control themselves.
That guy took that hit like a damn champion. Barely flinched and kept his cool.

It's girls softball, it's not like she was throwing a 95mph pitch.
If he didn't have his mask, he could've been seriously injured. Even if it missed, it would've been painful.
What was that coach thinking?

I'm mostly referring to keeping cool afterwards. If someone pulled something like that on me I guarantee you I would not just casually walk off. I wouldn't start a brawl or anything ridiculous, but I definitely wouldn't just shrug off something like that.

and??? softballs weigh more than baseballs and it's pitched closer to the home plate than baseball. it still hurts.

What, are you going to charge into the midfield and start waling on a 14 year old girl? The umpires obviously an older guy so it probably wouldn't be wise to start a fight over something that didn't even hurt him.
this looks like teen/high school level so that's an average of 45-55 mph

More along the lines of instantly throwing half the team out. I never said I'd be violent about it, but he just walked off, presumably to discuss it.

Softballs when pitched hurt soooo much and I can testify to that. Even with that mask he would have gotten a massive amount of jar from impact.
I don't understand what happened, can someone explain
[editline]7th December 2013[/editline]
Oh wait, I didn't watch till the end, thought it was at the start
but why is it a good thing to hit the ump in the first place? he has a wife and kids ffs
good call
Is anger in sports always this tense and passive aggressive?
this is disgusting

Watch Hockey
Ain't nothing passive about their aggressive :v:
I used to be a pitcher and they put me in a mixed team when I started.
I practised crazy hard and finally they let me pitch in a game where the team we were against had beaten us many times and our team was shit. So when we randomly put me out no one knew how good I was.
A girl was batting against me and me trying to show off a bit decided just to launch it. She tried to bunt the ball thinking because I was new I was useless. Ball spun up and hit her straight in the nose. Blood went everywhere, she was crying and I had no idea what to do. I felt pretty awful. But I think she felt much worse.
I was only young and I think I broke her nose so imagine what someone who trained much longer than my short time could do.
Short story is softballs will fuck you up.
Hopefully the coach is suspended or something.
Don't umpires normally use some sort of foam shield to block their body? Although since it hit him in the mask it doesn't really matter anyways.
Nice 2 minutes of nothing. That sport.
Why would the catcher jump out of the way?
Why would the catcher jump out of the way?
From what I've read, to be vindictive and cause injury to the umpire.

it's like you completely didn't read the title of the thread or the summary.
It's really kind of appalling, they didn't even pretend like it was an accident. It's so blatant and obvious they were trying to strike him, and if that hadn't hit his helmet, that would've been a lot worse. And all this over, what, a disagreement over his call? Assholes.
If they are not going to play a nice, fair game, might as well not play at all.
