I don't know what's the deal with thumbnails like that but apparently they're view count gold because all of the most popular channels (smosh, pewdiepie, markiplier) do it.
But Markiplier's actual videos don't make me cringe (like pewdiepie) or want to slit my wrists with the shards of my computer monitor after I smash my face through it (like smosh).

Unnecessarily loud at times
I like him but man, he still manages to overact a lot of the time
I can only handle Markiplier in small concentrated doses such as in animations:
