Well AVI works for me, try to update it.
I use k-lite codec pack, never had a problem.
vlc
VLC or K-Lite Codec Pack with Media Player Classic
3rd on CCCP

It's the same idea as K-lite but better put together.
VLC isn't a bad choice though either.
