FUCK THAT
[sp]pop pop pop pop pop..... :| [/sp]
I really like this Pennywise, very well done

honestly i prefer the way pennywise looks in the old one, he looked human but something was clearly off about him
the new look is a bit scary but clearly isn't human, something i feel like somebody wouldn't approach
The whole "now we know each other" trick has popped up in a bunch of movies, pretty sure that there is atleast one movie where the kid goes "just because I know your name does not mean we are no longer strangers"
please be good. it's a shame the dark tower flopped.

From the clip it gives off some seriously effective spook vibes, and his ethereal nature seems to be a decent alternative to the old human looking one I think.
I think the new IT movie is going to be a fun one to watch, don't get me wrong. The story itself is gold and so long as they don't try to get too creative and deviate from what made it a good story the actual design of Pennywise shouldn't matter too much.
But I think part of the thrill behind the old IT was that he did look human, something adults could be around and let their guard down. People could leave the movie theater and find themselves at a carnival months or years down the line and have Pennywise enter their thoughts at the sight of a clown.

pennywise originally appearing in the sewer looked almost comical, it was clear he was just a human dressed up like a clown so it came across as a combination of humorous and clearly unsettling. this new pennywise definitely has more of an obvious 'creep' factor about him, but you're right - he fails to appear as someone anyone would approach, ever. seeing the new pennywise in the sewers would make me piss my pants and run away, but the old pennywise would have me go over to him and check out what the hell a clown is doing in the sewers.
[editline]11th August 2017[/editline]
As someone who isn't afraid of clowns, I have to say that visually the old pennywise did very little to make me creeped out. It was all in his actions and the context of his appearances, something I fear the new pennywise won't have to rely on as much.

Well from what i heard about this film so far [sp]His not gonna be just pennywise and there's gonna be a focus on his shape shifting aspect from the book and won't be his clown form most of the time, they want him to be very unpredictable both in what his forms are and what his voice sounds like.[/sp]
Gonna post this article again incase anyone want's to learn more about the film.
*spoilers ahead in this article*

The only part I really dislike is the music used in that clip.
I'm really fucking tired of the dramatic string buildup that's used in like every modern horror film to build tension. It's overdone and almost patronizing in the way it lazily indicates when the big stressful moment is supposed to be when good cinematography and pacing are far more important.
Like if you watch the same scene in the original film the music is underhanded and constant which works better. It's a god damn clown in a sewer inviting a child to give him his hand, there really isn't a need for some a cheesy audio cue to clarify the unsettling nature of the situation.

You're right, it would be nice if they reduced the music cues and scare chords. Subtle horror that has the audience imagine and think instead of forcing a reaction is always better. There's nothing wrong with making movies that treat viewers as intelligent with a long attention span.

it might've been added just for the trailer. or the fact that the producers assume that everyone already knows what's going to happen, just not exactly when.
Still not a fan of Pennywise design, which feels a too on the nose to me, but I'm not exactly a fan of Bill Pennywise voice. It sounds forced and not genuine, which on one hand works as It isn't human and wouldn't be as natural, on the other hand it feels like a distraction to me as an audience member.
But it really kind of irritates me because this version is shown automatically as a monster, where as I liked the Curry version because of how naturally unassuming he was the first few times you see him, he's a chameleon who knows how to show charm so while you know something is wrong, but its not 100% clear this is a monster. Even when you know hes a monster later on he continues to present himself as this weird clown who loves to mindfuck his prey in this weird playful psychological torture.
Its been 20 years since I read the book and I remember Pennywise from the book being a bit closer to how he is here so it could just be my preferring the original performance :/

i think there going more for the threatening version of this creature in the book rather then trying to copy the pennywise from the mini-series, which makes sense imo. So it's intentional that he seems off putting almost immediately in this scene, even georgie notices that something is off with him after he stops laughing and gives him a cold dead stare, he actually starts to leave before IT mentions the boat to rope him back in, now that i re-watch this back a bit, there's a lot of subtle acting going on between the two. [sp]That voice his doing there is 1 of the many voices he will be doing in this film apparently and it's not just 1 singular main voice[/sp]
I absolutely cannot watch this film. I'll probably go read the book or something because of the hype train, but I can't take that Pennywise seriously.
Its just too.. cute? If you're gunna be a scary clown you really have to go for the creepy JWG/old movie look.

Son of a bitch. I want to like this, IT is still my favorite King novel, but the more I see of this Pennywise the more I dislike him. He looks like a god damn stereotypical evil clown, the kind of shit I'd see on a biker helmet. He looks so obviously fucked that no child would approach him, even if the time period was before the general dislike of clowns. It's mostly the makeup and shape of his lower jaw (and that he keeps hanging his mouth open), it's not even that it makes him look too scary but that it makes him look too vicious. And it's not that looking vicious is the problem, he's always supposed to have that undertone, but that he looks too vicious.
The way he talks really irks me too, there's no disarming with that performance (except for Georgie  ) he's just creep fuck rodeo right from the start. He'd immediately put anyone on the far edge and Georgie's reaction at the end is what any real kid his age would have been like from the beginning "(fuck this) uh gotta go bye".
Tim's overall performance was too much to be taken very seriously but I always liked his first sewer appearance, he's off-putting without being so on the red nose. This Pennywise doesn't look or act friendly enough for me to believe he casually convinces children and preteens to stick around.
Taken in small chunks he's got a few moments here that feel charming while subtly being off putting and if the whole thing had been like that I'd be much happier, but as it's one whole scene of interaction there's too much creep for me to suspend my disbelief.
The guy walking in front of the video gave me a little heart attack.

this entire scene (including the exact dialogue), as far as i remember, is lifted straight from the book. from 1986.
This looks so much more faithful to the book than the Curry miniseries does, just from this short scene, and the fact that they're actually going to go down the shapeshifting route really pleases me. I think this is gonna be a great film, if they don't go too overboard on the jump scares.

This is the point dude. He's trying to lure Georgie in.

I guess I should note that I watched the trailer first, which has action shots in it.

???
There are points in the book where the kids have to run away from IT, yes. IT drops the facade if the initial 'lure them in' doesn't work.
I just rewatched the trailer and have the same reaction. I'm just saying I can't suspend my disbelief for a monster that's wearing lipstick drawn into a curly mustache. That's fucking hilarious and jumpscares shouldn't make me actually laugh.
I'm seeing some confusion going on here in this thread so let me say this to clear the air.
They are adapting the book, not remaking the mini series that had tim curry in it. The pennywise you see here is the one from the book, and not the one from the mini series.
This isn't the full scene. [sp]Georgie still has both his arms.[/sp]

That doesn't change anything said, really. [sp]The entire point of spectral cthulhu shapeshifting immortal monster is that the shape shifts are pretty much flawless unless you have the knack and know what you're looking for, and each shape had it's own persona, echoes of the actual shape.
Tim Curry's portrayal nailed that. This is just literally a monster wearing a clownsuit and there's zero attempt to bring that "who is it now" dread that pervaded the book. I realize there's a very limited amount of real estate in a movie covering a book this huge, but this deliberate in saying that the audience is too dumb to get the nuance.[/sp]
From what I remember of the book [sp] The clown form was never really intended to lure in children, it was just one of It's favorite forms to fuck with the kids in Derry. I'm sure that almost all encounters with It as a clown straight away fucked with the Losers Club without trying to be friendly and lure them closer. [/sp]

Hell, theres a scene from the book where it takes the form of the Gilman from the "Creature from the black lagoon" hunts down one kid and tears his head off.

Pennywise explicitly states [sp]he chose the clown because it disarms people, and in particular "what child doesn't like a clown?"[/sp], during one of the chapters with the internal thoughts of [sp]the Deadlights[/sp].
Eh, not very creepy. You would think a clown in a run off drain would be creepy but for some reason this doesn't work for me. If it looked like a normal clown, and acted like one, then suddenly goes bipolar with some mean and deep sounding voice, like some asshole who drops the funny act, when Georgie didn't take it the first time he said take it... That would make for a better scene
But that's just me
