Something about the production seems off to me. Lowpass being treated as 'lofi'. Vocals sound a tad monotonous. First I've heard from him since the parody raps though. Some of the instrumentation is calming though, I can see what he was going for, but what's this sort of, reverbed up wailing? I thought he rapped

Joji has done this sort of chill lofi rap for a while now under the name "chloeburbank" on soundcloud.

Joji's production has never been solid, but his sampling and general vibe is on point. I think if he worked closely with a pro he'd benefit a lot.

You know, I just listened to the whole thing, and I get what you mean. Thing is, I don't think it's just the production, I feel like he didn't enjoy making this, like the tone gives off an indifferent sensation to my ears.
He sounds like a bored kid cudi backed by a convoluted ambient track, mixed with smooth instrumentation and sharp ratchets. It might just be me though, but I think he's just trying to be too many things at once in this.
when he said he was gonna make music as joji i was hoping it'd be stuff more like this:

i know this is a pink guy track but he says in the description that it's a serious song that he dumbed down a bit. stuff like this and pink omega (which was also supposed to be a break into somewhat more serious music but then he put in on a pink guy album anyway for some reason) are his best material imo and i was hoping he'd do more like it. maybe he's not confident enough to rap "seriously" or maybe he's afraid that him rapping will make people associate his solo stuff with pink guy, but i find his slow sad stuff kind of repetitive and boring.
I liked 'Pills'. Thats about it. Strong 5 on this one
Sounds like shit to be honest.
I know it's meant to be chill and whatever but it was boring as hell even for lofi.
But that's just me, I dug it for the first song but it just was more of the same sound.
I just wish he broke it up a bit with some variety
I kind of got a "You heard one, you heard them all" vibe to this which is not always bad i guess since if they are good songs i can just let it play in the background but this feels very monotone to me.

So here's a genuine question I have: how bad is that actually?
I was thinking of someday making an EP myself but from what information I gathered all the tracks in said EP should usually have the same theme or genre or something. So to be honest at this moment if I were to approach making an EP my goal would also be "make tracks that sound similar".
Feels like he's so focused on being ~artistic~ that he's forgotten to make something that's actually enjoyable to listen to.
His pink guy music sounds so much better than his normal persona
Isn't he still working on Chloe Burbank?
was really disappointed that the whole album was lofi mumblecore. i know he said he wanted to get away from pink guy but there's a reason people like pink guy raps
[editline]3 November 2017[/editline]
i think i could actually take pink guy styled joji more seriously than this
snip
The beats are chill aside from the annoying grinding sounds but his vocals are whiny.
I hope he gets this kind of valid criticism pushed under his nose. He deserves to continue to grow instead of bootlickers saying it's the greatest thing ever.
I liked it! Really chill music.
I'm no music connoisseur, but I liked it too. I like having this kind of chill music in the background when I'm working, it really helps me focus and relax.
"Will He", "Bitter Fuck", and "Window" were good, but the stand out for me was "Pills". Wasn't too big of a fan of "Demons" though, would've been better without that plastic crackle noise in the instrumentals.
maybe im just in a sad, emo mood but this was pretty good
How does nobody here get that pink guy is a totally different brand than joji? Everything he's released under joji, ever, has been stylistically similar to this stuff. Pink Guy is his satirical vulgar rap name, joji is his lo-fi R&B name. He's not going to be releasing a Pink Guy-styled album under the joji name, and I doubt he'll ever really rap under the joji name.
I don't get why everyone's confusing the two. This is the same music he's been making for years.

i mean i dunno, I'm not necessarily confused, just curious as to why he won't do a subdued version of a more upbeat rap style. because realistically, if this is all he wants to put out under joji and he wants to pursue a serious music career then he might want to be more diverse. I think he's got a good flow and id like to hear more performances like that than this, and if he's actually permanently retiring that part of his ability it would be a shame

It's because pink guy has ended. People aren't confusing them, they're just pointing out the pink guy style was better.

Similar in genre sure, but you should be able to bring more ideas to the table then what feels like a repeat of another song with a slightly different take.
Take for example, Rainforest, an EP by Clams Casino
In one hand, you have this ambient, relaxing track:

And in the other, a more charged, intense track:

A better example even may be Rio by Orangutang:

And compare it with the somber Ghost on the same record:

Good EPs maintain a consistent, clear genre / theme with clear peaks and valleys of intensity and emotion. Joji maintains a constant droney atmosphere that fails to hold one's attention. When people say something sounds the same, it's because it's boring. Take me on a little journey, show me what you have to offer. His vocals never go above and beyond, there's never any catchy hooks, moments, or anything that make you feel like he's really come up with something special. You can make a good EP / Album with the same style of song, even the same exact instrumentation (see: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, which is largely just a guy yelling with a guitar) but you need to keep it interesting.

Same. I'm really digging it, but that's more than likely because I'm still dealing with a breakup that happened to me over summer and these songs are just the kind of shit I'm looking for
Does he produce his stuff?
