The power that the mind has over the body is overwhelming. I once fractured three vertebrae whilst drunk, stood up and walked away because I thought I couldn't possibly be hurt. Next morning I can barely lean forward to put my shoes on, but still manage to walk to a hospital, thinking it might be just a slipped disc or something, I didn't know. (After having a flat-mate help me get dressed.) The doctors take an X-ray, then look at me like I've just walked in on a severed leg. Now imagine if I'd have been taught all my life that I couldn't possibly fracture my spine. I would have thought that my spine was testing me and had to have reaffirmed my faith in my spine...
