Very well made analysis. Explained why I love this game much more that I could do.
SOMA is probably the best horror game of this year for me
Soma is a really good fucking game. Good ability to tell a story, engaging and fun game play, and of course monsters that unnerve you and make you shit brix. It's probably frictional's best to be honest.
so far I haven't beaten yet half way point but its bloody great story so far
SOMA is probably the best horror game of this year for me
Totally agree with you, probably not the scariest one I played this year, but it's definitely the best!
I bought this game a few days ago and have been playing it non-stop. I'm not much for horror games but SOMA is truly a genre-bending game that is fantastic on all levels.
SOMA is probably the best horror game of this year for me
For me, it was one of the best story games of this year.
That was a great video, love to see more in the future.
Some really precise insights, the kind that makes you think to yourself "yeah, that's exactly how I felt but didn't fully realize until just now." SOMA is the only game I bothered to complete this year. I'm extremely anxious to play horror games, and doing some parts of SOMA felt like mental torture for me. Still, I found myself (for the first time ever) pushing on, despite the utter terror and anxiety that the game caused me, much like a person would in a real situation like this. Something inside kept telling me that I can't quit, that I must finish the story. I guess that's the effect of the 4-layer narrative design for ya. Frictional is probably my favorite studio, everything since Penumbra has been stellar.
He said there's no alternate endings. Isn't there 2 endings though?
He said there's no alternate endings. Isn't there 2 endings though?
Sort of. Theres the main ending, and then after the credits you experience another perspective of that ending.
I hate this game with a passion. The only interesting thing in it is its post-apocolyptic setting under the water and it's graphics. The game's story after the initial sequence is predictable, the dialogue for the main characters is awful and so obnoxiously on the nose that it feels like they are waving a giant billboard at the player. The entire premise is basic as hell and yet sometimes there are points where I can't help but think even the developers don't understand it. References to flipping a coin and the utterly meaningless choice of just shutting down the X simulation or deleting the X simulation. This compounds itself with the main character being 1) an idiot, and 2) constantly monologue with the subtlety of a canon. Adding insult to injury it isn't even scary, if it was marketed as more of an exploration game then I might be more forgiving but as horror it is utterly miserable. This could have been a lot better with a lot more interesting concepts regarding existence and how it fits with machines but if you think the game as it is right now is some sort of big awe inducing revelation then you need to think more.

I do agree the coin flipping makes no sense and only confuses the player more than it helps understand the story. But saying it's "utterly miserable" as a horror game, thats bollocks

It's annoying because for the rest of the damn time he is soap boxing on the games idea. As for it being an utterly miserable horror game, All I can say is I didn't find it scary. The enemies are just clearly telegraphed annoyances.
Adding insult to injury it isn't even scary, if it was marketed as more of an exploration game then I might be more forgiving but as horror it is utterly miserable.
this is more the fault of Frictional's reputation getting the better of them. they mostly only make horror-themed walking simulators with pretty much nothing scary about the barely-there gameplay (and in Amnesia's case nothing scary about the plot either), but because Amnesia was overhyped into ~the second coming of survival horror~ they were expected to do the same thing with SOMA. when all they really wanted to do was an adventure game with some grim ideas.
