shitstorm incoming
I think the stupidest thing is people threating her and making flash games where you beat her up. I wish people would understand the concept of "ignore" and move on.
I always find it funny when anything called "x versus THE FACTS" are very short on facts themselves.
I always find it funny when videos called "x versus THE FACTS" are very short on facts themselves.
Watch the video.
i think this video should be called "missing the point: i turn it into a science". he is pretentious enough to name his video "feminism vs. fact" but i'm about 7 minutes in and there haven't really been any facts, just willful ignorance of what anita sarkeesian is saying to the point that he looks like a 5 year old child trying to weasel his way out of taking out the trash.
omg he even says he made the title dumb to reflect how he doesn't like the title "tropes vs women" i don't even [editline]15th March 2013[/editline] he's making an example of it
Apparently you too missed the bit explaining the title. I wonder if you're watching it with a blindfold on and the volume muted. Darn it where did the quoted bit go? Oh well :D
he does kind of miss the point though

Alright I'm about six minutes in and this guy is completely beating around the bushes instead of doing any actual analysis. He's seriously comparing the objectification of women with the Damsel in Distress trope with people in hospitals or abduction victims. REALLY? [editline]hahah what a fucking idiot[/editline] Sure, willingness to sacrifice is a sign of caring. That's how the real world works, but in media and videogames this almost never portrayed this way, it's usually more like retrieving stolen property. That's why those games were used as examples. looks like he's the one with the blindfold on tbh
the first "fact" is that a female character who is incapacitated with a single punch and abducted in the opening later punches the final boss therefore completely defuncting the original point that women are presented badly in that gtame... but this only happens after she is rescued and the boss is defeated in gameplay by the male protagonists. it's literally a 2 second animation at the end of a game entirely about rescuing a helpless woman
lol yeah a women punching a dude in the balls after being captured and having to be saved men is a strong female character. intent doesn't make things OK now he's being patronizing holy shit he literally used misandric im done with this lmao
You missed the bit where he talks about why people save other people. Not because they are objects, but because they care. Would you like me to just walk on by next time I see a lady trapped in a burning building?
I was really hoping for a video smart enough for it to be a challenge to argue against. This, however, is the same bullshit as in the other threads, made into a video. Anita has a point in what she is doing, let her talk, and let's not be dicks about feminism in the video game industry, please. [editline]15th March 2013[/editline]
You missed the bit where he talks about why people save other people. Not because they are objects, but because they care.
holy shit he literally used misandric im done with this lmao
you aren't missing much i'm 15 minutes in and it's pretty lame. he's saying that anita doesn't want strong women because strong is a masculine trait.
holy shit he literally used misandric im done with this lmao
Were you even paying attention to the video?
You missed the bit where he talks about why people save other people. Not because they are objects, but because they care. Would you like me to just walk on by next time I see a lady trapped in a burning building?
ok well how many games do you play a game as a lady trying to save your kidnapped husband?
You missed the bit where he talks about why people save other people. Not because they are objects, but because they care. Would you like me to just walk on by next time I see a lady trapped in a burning building?
more completely missing the point of a feminist critique the original video isn't a piece by piece deconstruction of every 'damsel in distress' game ever, it's an exploration of the theme as a whole from a feminist perspective. it's not saying "men rescuing women is always bad at all times" it's saying "in a lot of video games, men rescue helpless female characters and this almost never happens the other way around. this presents a negative view of women being helpless" why do people find it so hard to grasp that a sociological critique of a medium doesn't deal with masses of hypothetical situations, it just looks at how the medium as a whole presents a particular subject
you aren't missing much i'm 15 minutes in and it's pretty lame. he's saying that anita doesn't want strong women because strong is a masculine trait.
no, his point is that her video manages to contradict her own master's thesis
no, his point is that her video manages to contradict her own master's thesis
but it doesn't?
you aren't missing much i'm 15 minutes in and it's pretty lame. he's saying that anita doesn't want strong women because strong is a masculine trait.
It's in her own thesis. The "damsel" is used purely as an object to motivate the player into beating the game. This guy is ignoring those facts and adding stuff that just isn't there.
"To serve.... A market...."
yea, a sexist market. they don't have to be consciously sexist to make sexist things.
In the games used as examples there's zero sign of caring between the hero and the damsel character.
It's in her own thesis. What are you smoking?
do you not understand how a simple chart works strength is usually attributed to men and is generally a masculine trait, and strong also has more meanings than 'brute force' and you're really trying hard to twist this into a way to hate a woman
here women this time, that means you're allowed watching it
yea, a sexist market. they don't have to be consciously sexist to make sexist things.
Make sure you destroy sexist women's magazines and fashion shows while you're at it then.
Do you not get that writers made these games, they aren't something that happened? they write them so that the women are abducted and need to be saved.
It's written like that because it gives the player an easy goal to achieve while only spending around 10 seconds or less of exposition, and it's also a plot point everyone can understand. No developer is going "YES! Let's make the WOMAN in our game WEAK and HELPLESS! MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
How would you use 7 whole seconds to set the back story?
holyyyy crap you realize that the game could choose to have a longer backstory right, that point in the video makes absolutely no sense at all backstory in video games doesnt have a strict 7 second requirement, someone made it that way
