He makes some very good points, and i don't think i can argue with him.
Gonna have to agree with him- I'm not gonna call Oculus dead just because they got 2 billion dollars and are now owned by a software company. While I can't say they won't try to do stuff to it, I can say that it's more welcome than XBOXLIVE, had Microsoft had purchased them (which could have happened, considering Sony created their own version). Jim's always had some rather good points, despite the douche nature of his Quisition Qharacter.
Best of all evils. I sorta wanted Rift to stay indie, but then I think about all the other indie hardware out there, such as the fucking ouya, and I think this is better.
I feel like what company should have obtained the rift would be a display manufacturer. It pretty much would be game/system neutral and they would be able to provide their own displays for the rift to use. They don't have a specific agenda besides selling a better display. They would also provide display drivers for the rift, like they would with any other monitor. Facebook has that agenda of wanting to 'socialize' everything for ad revenue. The PC hardware manufacturers like AMD and nVidia would totally make it proprietary for their cards. I don't think game companies would want to acquire the rift because they have history of failures with VR.
Those dogs were too distracting.
Rift wasn't built on filling a niche that no one wanted filled though.
Instead, it was built on a niche that few people wanted to fill. I thought it was just going to be a gimmick. A cool gimmick at that, but nothing with too much potential to build up with.
Well, I get what he's saying, and what he's saying is agreeable, but I still don't get what Facebook wants to use VR for.
Well, I get what he's saying, and what he's saying is agreeable, but I still don't get what Facebook wants to use VR for.
facebook can be the ones to say 'we published the first VR headset' facebook gets to use their fortune to ensure a resounding commercial success via advertising and marketing, turning VR into a household thing many years ahead of schedule facebook can use the rift's status as the best (and currently only) PC VR device to sell people on the idea of a facebook social game, think second life but owned by facebook and not anciently crappy watch a movie with your friend in Hong Kong while feeling like you're in the same theatre? thanks facebook! virtually explore fantastical environments as if you're there? thanks facebook! every game in VR you play, every awesome new thing the rift brings about in gaming, social, and other fields, facebook will be the one the masses thank facebook will ensure their longevity with this, so long as they can sell people on the idea of virtual reality
I think it could end with some sort of less-creepy version of second life and I think that's pretty neat
There is another way of looking at it. We just took another leap towards fufilling the transhumanist dream.
There is another way of looking at it. We just took another leap towards fufilling the transhumanist dream.
These goggles aren't really transhumanist.
These goggles aren't really transhumanist.
Facebook, Google glass, VR and retinal displays. Ignore the whole gaming aspect and see the larger perspective. These technologies are slowly changing the way we think, how we communicate and how we as a larger collective aquire information. Even just by looking down at your android to check facebook or get the latest news updates you are activly participating in a sort of collective consciousness. Despite the distance we all live from eachother, almost everyone are on the same page.
