A few days late.
Wait, Whut?
I'm pretty sure they're still not using them correctly...
It's the separation of two separate clauses
"I've never been to the gym; I don't work out"

Got that the first time thanks.
“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college."
- Kurt Vonnegut
Semicolons are alright really; they certainly aren't as bad as using, for instance, a whole bunch of commas, when one, or perhaps two, would have sufficed, or similar things like- heaven forbid!- hyphens in huge excess, and this is all without mentioning the overuse of the ellipsis...

Seriously though, reading Dickens have left me using far more commas than the average person, and gigantic, mangled sentences. It's upsetting.
