This video does have spoilers for Gone Home so if you're really that invested into the story then don't watch. Another video by Allosaurus Rex.
That was actually a really good analysis of the game. I saw it on steam and I saw it took place in Oregon which I thought was cool since I live there. I watched an LP of the whole thing and once I realized it really was just a giant story I didn't feel like buying it. It's like watching a movie. It's not like the more you play, different things will happen. It's just like a more interactive movie but each time you play it, you may realize something you didn't catch before. The story left me feeling sad and depressed anyway. Am I supposed to be happy? Uh, no... I don't think so with that ending. But at least I didn't buy it.
This guy, I like him.
Great review, I personally cant stand games like this, selling this for $20 is absurd, the fact it got an 89 on metacritic is even more absurd, if a big triple A company put this EXACT game out it would have gotten like a 2, so im curious as to why being an indie lets you get away with mediocrity. Post the story online and ill walk around my house and pretend I had an 18 year old lesbian sister who ran from home as I read it.
For the most part I do agree with him. How he describes the game as being an "interactive novel" coincides with my perception of the game. Based on gameplay videos I've seen it seems like the exploration seems fun at first but the novelty wears down pretty quickly as he described. And how he describes the game featuring all the typical "teenage runaway" archetypes, the only thing different being that your sister in the game is a lesbian which is the "twist" of the game. But due to the fact that your sister in the game is a lesbian and the overall "interactive novel" feel of the game critics are praising it like it was some revolutionary new game and is "progressive" in nature but in reality the game isn't too interesting (at least to me). It may have been better if it tweaked a few things (like a less linear feel to the game and more room for exploration in some parts) but it lost out in any further potential it had. And the fact it's 20 USD feels like a ripoff for a game like this and could be a little more wisely spent on other indie games or just generally cheaper games. Overall it's a mixed bag for me.
Maybe it just means I'm a generic person but I really related to Sam and Lonnie and didn't think it was a two dimensional relationship at all. I'm one of the unlucky people that bought it full price (9.99 would have been much more reasonable) but I knew what I was getting into and don't really regret it.
I think this picture fits.
