can't say i disagree with many of the things he said "except for the mario 06 comment but i'm not sure how serious he was with that comment) i'm still waiting to hear the price point for the online subscription. because really it's one of the most boneheaded ones out there ( only nintendo is capable of thinking that the best course of action for switch voice chat is a paid phone app. as if people would just use the something like discord instead)
I disagree on the portability, I have to stress this to everyone who criticises it: this is a home console first and a portable console second. Look at the size of it, you're not going to be using that "on the go". But you can easily take it to a friend's house, on a long haul journey, and around the house when you don't want to/can't use the TV. As for the battery: it's a USB-C charged home console, to me it's a non issue. Even if I take it out of the house I have a portable power bank. However, on the series of Nintendo moves I agree wholeheartedly. The online system, the ROM a month system, the motion gimmicks, the launch lineup, the lack of bundles, the price of accessories, the unlikely virtual console support. All the other bloody things. The ROMs and the way they're doing it with subs in particular, I got shit for saying it on here, but the way they've handled their old IPs is so dumb. They're all massive turn offs to what is, in my opinion, the most promising console I've ever seen.
Look at the size of it, you're not going to be using that "on the go"..
It only has a 6.2" screen. My Nexus 7 has a bigger screen and while it is thinner and overall not as long (with both controllers on) I very much use it on the go. Sure, not while I walk (a lot) but while I sit in the train/tram/car etc. Obviously this is without the base station but that is supposed to stay at your home anyways.
Part of me thinks the reason as to why we won't get to keep the NES/SNES game each month is because it would probably result in too many licensing issues, at least with non-Nintendo titles. However Sony for an example has managed to give out quite nice deals with PS+ so I doubt Nintendo has much of an excuse.
The games you get with Xbox Gold are yours forever, even if you stop your subscription. The ones you get with PS+ are yours as long as you have a subscription (including if it lapses and you renew it). You also get game discounts. Nintendo just lending you a NES/SNES game for 1 month is fucking insulting.
I think the two biggest things I dislike about the Switch are paid online and how it seems very likely that there will be the same shitty supply problems that mean I probably still won't have this console next year even if I set aside $300 for it right now. Maybe I'll turn out to be wrong, but it's my opinion (and probably far from just mine) that Nintendo's online services aren't worth paying for. They don't know how to make an online system worth a fuck. Just trying to find a level in Mario Maker from what I understand involves putting in a fucking 16 digit course ID. Their interfaces are dog shit. They don't provide voice chat, a feature that was on the original XBOX, until just now, and you have to do it over a smartphone. And the only games I'm aware of to actually bother going online for are Smash, Mario Maker, and Splatoon, and the only one of those present on Switch is Splatoon 2, which comes out 'sometime in summer'. I don't think even with all three of them that access to online in those games is worth paying the same prices you'd pay to play online on your xbox or playstation. But the part that hurts is I still want to be able to play those games. Like, I don't want to pay every month just so I can have access to the inevitable new Smash game when I only want to play a few matches of smash every now and then. Same with splatoon.
Paid online is really the only thing that pisses me off. Everything else about the Switch is fine.
What annoyed me the most about the Switch is how it went from "hey look everyone we are actually making a serious console this time" from the first showing to "MOTION CONTROLS WE HAVE MOTION CONTROLS WHO LIKES MOTION CONTROLS" Made me think the first trailer was just false advertising.

It only shows how out of touch NoJ can be with their consumer base, and I'm sure they'll try to place a positive spin on it and make it seem like it's the best thing ever. Other than that I think my biggest gripe, like many other people, is their introduction of paid online services (as of right now). They reeaaaallllyyyy need to step their game up by leaps and bounds on that front, even if the service fee is nominal. I'm sure they have some kind of major overhaul planned for the Switch in order to make it work, but currently I think their online services are by far the worst. Honestly I think the Switch will do fine once it gets rolling, and Nintendo seems to have more confidence behind this machine when compared to the Wii-U. I'm just not completely sold at this point, and it's something I'll probably look at purchasing early next year.
I can't take anyone who compares Mario Odyssey to Sonic 06 seriously
I can't take anyone who compares Mario Odyssey to Sonic 06 seriously
Jim can't either:
the switch def has a few of those "Nintendo Moves" paid online one nes/snes game a month overpriced accessories
I would probably put the paid online in the "Nintendo is way behind the times" column instead of the "Nintendo makes a dumb move" category, simply because Microsoft has been leading the console market down this path for nearly 15 years, and people threw a similar fit about Sony price gouging their online connections but not bothering to upgrade the service in any way four years ago. It would be nice to see this ideology of receiving payment for better online features with giving very little in return, but it was begrudgingly accepted twice and I don't see it failing a third time.

But Wiis sold like mad because of Wii Sports, to not include a pack-in like 1-2 Switch seems shortsighted (especially since the console comes with two joycons, no need to buy another controller).

But they still made the choice to drop the ball in this regard.
I'm interested in the addition of online multiplayer to NES/SNES games, but if I only get one a month, and I don't get to keep it, then the service had better be $20 or less for a year. I don't think that it could be $50-$60 a year and sustain itself. Whatever happens, I'm only planning on subbing for a month or two after the new Smash comes out anyways.
i can't believe people still defend nintendo after so many shitty practices and abusive marketing
i can't believe people still defend nintendo after so many shitty practices and abusive marketing
People will defend any company they remember fondly, even if that company is a shell of its former self.
The retarded paid online was the thing that completely got rid of my interest for the Switch (though other things, such as voice chat being a smartphone app, the shitty freebies from the subscription service, and still vague system specs helped cement it). Online multiplayer should always be free if I already paid for a game upfront, and I'm probably not going to be using the Switch for Mario Kart or Splatoon consistently.

I think all you really need to look at is how the switch actively sabotages its own selling points. It's a portable that's more of a home console that tries to offer ways for multiple people to use it while charging up to $70-$80 just for individual accessories. Just getting two more joycons and a game is already $130. I would expect that from a standard console, but not a console advertised as being something that makes it easy to go to a party and play mario kart with four friends on your glorified tablet. When the biggest selling points of your console are dragged down by battery life, bad performance, and prohibitively expensive accessories something is clearly wrong. If you wanted a console, it's not a great console. If you wanted a handheld, it's not a great handheld. This identity crisis is the exact same shit that we had with the Wii U. That system didn't know if it wanted to be a gimmicky screen or a home console and it's like Nintendo didn't learn anything.
I looked through some new job applications Nintendo of America put up and I can't help but find it funny how they are looking for people with "Up-to-date knowledge of the video game industry". I'm not sure if Nintendo is very up-to-date considering the decisions they're making...
Nintendo of Japan should be the one putting that on their applications since they're making most of the decisions here. NoA is better than NoJ in my opinion, if only by a margin.
You're thinking Nintendo of Japan. NoA is better than NoJ in my opinion, if only by a margin.
Nintendo of Japan is antiquated in their methods and habits. Nintendo of America has no supplies for anything anymore.
Nintendo of Japan is antiquated in their methods and habits. Nintendo of America has no supplies for anything anymore.
Both would need an entire restructure at this point, I'm afraid.
Literally the only thing I don't like about the Switch is that you've gotta pay to use online features. I think that's pretty dumb, especially when it's marketed mostly at kids. I hope they don't implement that in their previous consoles (not that they won't discontinue them completely in a few years time). A lot of the Switch titles are being ported to the Wii U, though, so even if the Switch turns out to be garbage as a console, the games will have potential to shine!
i can't believe people still defend nintendo after so many shitty practices and abusive marketing
Nostalgia is powerful. It's probably the biggest reason companies like Nintendo and Valve get a free ride in a lot of people's eyes, because hey we grew up with a snes or n64 or we played half life 2 as a kid or whatever.

We will have to see if they have the same effect the SNES and Genesis did on that generation of people.
It's ok to love Nintendo. The thing is it's perfectly alright to point out the flaws Nintendo has. You don't need to just accept and agree with everything Nintendo does. But people seem to think disagreeing with one thing Nintendo does means you hate everything Nintendo.

Though to be fair, rabid anti-[insert fanbase here] people can be just as whiny and overly-reactionary towards any criticism as rabid fans.
