• 20mm Gatling Gun Shooting Down a Missile: Improved Version

20mm Phalanx CIWS shooting down a drone missile from back in my Navy days. The old version of this that I uploaded a couple years ago has been posted here before, but in that version the quality was absolute shit (240p) and you weren't able to see the sparks fly off the missile. Now that I can actually edit a video properly I had to dig into my Myspace account (yes, Myspace) to find the original video from about 7 years ago. Luckily it was there and I cropped it right this time. It's only a very brief moment right around :45, but you can see sparks from the rounds hitting the missile in the upper left corner, it kind of looks like a meteor. Took me for fucking ever to spot those sparks man.
I still can't see the sparks.
I'm gonna need a red circle or something because I didn't see nothing but the Phalanx.
It's just a streak of light you can see in the top left at about 0:45
It might be hidden by the title bar. It's a faint, short white burst, right next to where the g in 'shooting' is when the title bar is down. Start long enough for the title bar to go back up before :43 or so, and stare at where the g in 'shooting' was. It could be mistaken for a spot of film grain, if this were a film.

Even when you can see it it's VERY brief. I wish I would have caught what I saw with my own eyes on camera, my camera angle didn't see sparks at all, this was my buddy's camera that caught this angle. I was actually in better position to see it, but my camera sucked ass and I was more focused on watching it myself than filming. Shit would have been epic if I caught it though, the streak lasted a couple seconds. If I didn't see the sparks in real life myself I would have never noticed them in the video.
Never noticed it before but that thing is still shooting when it resets pointing back at the horizon
Laser CIWS when?
It's so sick how abruptly it comes alive like that.
Laser CIWS when?
I'm a laser tech for my current job, I don't understand how this weapon will work if the enemy uses reflective surfaces on their missiles. Our systems use mirrors to guide the beam, the beam just reflects off and doesn't damage the mirror. Plus, focusing the laser beam must be a pain in the ass. Then again, I work on laser engraving and cutting systems, not military grade technology so they may have some way more high tech stuff. I just don't see laser weapons being very effective in all conditions (fog, dust, rain, etc). The lasers I work on also have a certain focal point, if you are even an inch out of focus the laser will not even do anything to the object on the table. I'm kind of interested to see how this thing works.
Any military laser is collimated such that it has no focal point without atmospheric lensing
That's kind of what I was thinking. I wasn't sure if it calculated the distance of the object and changed focal lengths or if it was just a straight collimated beam with extremely high wattage. I still don't think this weapon will be good for ships though.
