Quite a clever way of getting a serious topic across to a lot of people
Is it me, or is that broadwell cpu massive?

looks quite broad

A while ago they also unboxed this thing from Intel
Is it me, or is that broadwell cpu massive?
It costs $1600, it's not something you'd find on your regular machine.
If i buy a conflict free CPU, will i get a box full of dirt too?
I was expecting him to unearth a skull or something at the bottom but that would probably be too morbid.
If i buy a conflict free CPU, will i get a box full of dirt too?
I'll take the box of dirt with the free notebook any day of the week.
I'll take the box of dirt with the free notebook any day of the week.
No brand markings on it, but it looks like an HP.
So really you've still just got a box of dirt.
I was not expecting this
I just got tricked into watching an Intel commercial.
What does "conflict free" even mean? For all we know, it means that they didn't exploit miners in the Congo, and instead exploited miners somewhere else.
wouldn't it be something if it turned out the laptop shown was developed by foxconn using minerals recovered from Nestle™ cocoa slaves

at least the overall message was to raise awareness of mineral sources
if the world actually took it to heart we might one day see legislation banning imports of slave labor
[editline]26th July 2016[/editline]
not that i entirely trust they didn't do this knowing the vast majority of people won't give a shit, effectively making this just an advertisement
i guess what i really want is more information on where things are sourced from, like you said
I thought they sent him a box of AMD's hopes and dreams at the start :v:

Haven't read the whole thing but apparently they're still from the Congo, but aren't under the control of Warlords.

Considering the Congo is a mineral hotspot, they were pretty much always going to be sourcing from there.
It's similar to Fairtrade products really, the slightly harder and more valuable ingredients in a number of products are found in places like this, controlled by warlords. Fairtrade aims to avoid the warlords part, and actually reimburse the guys who get the ingredients more fairly (but not totally fairly, we've got profit to make damn you).
Aside from the importance of the message in the video, he blatently knew what was in the box because in the same shot, he mentioned links in the description at the end of the video. Anyway, it says it was sponsored by Intel so I guess it makes sense that it was a bit scripted.
Cool video

Sounds likely, due to probably getting a press pack / instructions beforehand
I'm really interested in conflict free minerals. I hope more technology starts carrying that conflict-free logo on it. If I had the choice between having it and not, I'd definitely choose the former, but it's very hard to find out if a product uses it without that kind of marketing.
I feel a bit conflicted about it. On one hand it's a serious issue they've brought to peoples attention, on the other hand they're capitalising on a serious issue, by saying "buy this, it's the responsible thing to do" "if you don't buy these CPUs, you're an asshole".
I guess this means that if I ever get married I'll have to buy her a conflict-free i7

Well, Intel isn't going to incur costs without getting something out of it, so of course it's a marketing move. At the same time, it is legitimately a good thing, and if you feel morally compelled to buy products made from conflict free materials, it's probably because you actually should. If you can't afford it, that's something different.
I'm actually curious how much control companies have over where the minerals come from. I know Nintendo got targeted by a group about using those materials awhile back but I don't think they had control over or even any idea where the materials came from.

I still kind of conflicted on this issue too, but I would rather have a company do face-saving measures or at least pretend to care then not care at all. If it makes the world a bit less shitty then why not?

Rather that than a blood-i7.

He could have just said himself (with his voice) the video was sponsored. Instead, he opted to put it in small text in the bottom left corner for 5 seconds at the beginning (since he was probably legally obligated to do so).
And what more, he used a god damn aerosol flamethrower and screamed in order to distract the viewers from seeing it, effectively hiding the fact the video is a 5 minute ad.
I don't care if you were keen enough to notice that little blue text the first time watching it. I'm sure 90% of his viewers didn't.

I think you need glasses or you need to take the tunnel vision goggles off because how did you not see blue text in front of a white table?
the irony in all of this is that by me posting my complaints about this ad, i am bumping the thread, which makes more people view the ad
