also you should all go watch this movie (especially because nobody else is LOL)
Loved the movie - masterpiece.
Is it really doing that bad? I saw the movie at 4:00 in the afternoon in an absolutely packed IMAX theater today.
That's pretty surprising to hear, I enjoyed it more than the original movie.

I was one of about 20 people in my massive theater on opening night lol. Had an entire row to myself. But yea the budget for it is massive, especially for an R rated movie. It's reported at $150 but some are claiming it's $177, or even $185. So it needs to make a LOT of money to make a profit (some claiming $400 million is the magic number but again there's disputes over that), plus way more if they want to justify all the sequels they want to do as well.
And, well, it's first weekend is looking to be about ~$35 million here in the states, and another <$50 everywhere else. Yea that's pretty bad lol. Gets a China release in November at least but people are pessimistic about that doing well given it's R rated and nobody really cares about Bladerunner over there.
We'll see what happens for sure tho in the coming weeks. If it can keep up some strong numbers over the coming weeks then who knows, maybe it won't do too badly. But as far as the sequels go, I seriously doubt they're gonna ever happen lol.
im probably gonna watch it twice next week, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark having a showing in the theatres. it looks great, and i have full faith in Villeneuve. he has yet to let me down. im actually optimistic for his Dune movie.
My housemate and I were going to watch it today, until he decided he wanted to sleep in instead, and so we'll watch it next weekend.
That being said, we watched the first Blade Runner (final cut) yesterday - his first time, and my second time.
I was hoping that my second watching (it's been ~6 years for me) I would enjoy the film more. But no, I really didn't. My opinion that the film just kinda meanders and rambles and doesn't really accomplish anything to justify its runtime hasn't changed.
That being said, I did gain a newfound respect for the crazy lighting in the film.
And regardless, I am still psyched as fuck to see the new film, if for no reason, because it's a scifi Villeneuve film. As such, I'm going to hold off on watching this episode till after I see the film.
Just got home from watching it. Honestly blown away, absolutely fantastic movie
regardless of how good or bad this may be, its really dropped in at the worst possible year for films

I saw it at 2 this afternoon, IMAX as well, and there were maybe 15 people total was all. The entire megaplex was pretty empty, it's sort of a strange time for a movie like this to come out. People just don't go see stuff in October.
Saw it yesterday, really great. It kept the pace up much better than the first one, some places it dragged a bit. Although not as much as the first one.
Name dropping Dark City like that? They better do re:view on it.
So we never learn whether Ryan Gosling [sp]is a real human being and a real hero[/sp]?
It was great but it had its quirks, would probably only recommend it if someone really liked the original Blade Runner. At times it felt unnecessary slow and several things were never explained in the movie.
It's such a great movie and a great sequel, I really loved that they didn't just repeat the story of the first one.
legit Villeneuve's best picture and one of Gosling's best performance. I left the theatre almost high off how fucking amazing it was.
Blade Runner 2049 is a benchmark sequel that understands what makes the original great but jumps off to do its own thing. Endless respect. Every frame was a masterpiece and good god was it good
It's bombing but it'll be a cult hit to come
It really felt like this movie got like no push
I didn't even know it was out yet until someone I know mentioned they were going to see it a few days ago.
I think the main issue with trying to push the movie was that the fanbase for the first one was already kind of niche, and the prospect of a new movie set in the same universe after so many years (since the movie was made, not the plot) seemed sort of dodgy at best to that niche. Honestly, I'm assuming most people are just waiting to see what the general impressions of the movie are first before going to see it.
Now that the consensus seems to be that "iz gud", I'm expecting more and more people to start watching it.
That was definitely the case for me. The movie looked awesome visually, but I was wary as to how the actual movie itself would be. Now that I'm hearing that it's good, I'm planning on seeing it at some point in the future.

i can't wait for 4k bluray release so i can make backgrounds out of screenshots of the movie, shit is absolutely beautiful
I guess it probably seems intimidating to those who haven't seen the original
I guess it probably seems intimidating to those who haven't seen the original
And probably doubly intimidating to those who did see the original and didn't much care for it.
The original is a decidedly... esoteric film. Especially for those who were big fans of Harrison Ford's other films at the time, and then went into Blade Runner expecting another Raiders or Star Wars.
I had no idea it was actually out, none of my friends mentioned it either.
I didn't think it was coming out for another month or two, I suppose I'll go see this on Friday then.
The movie is great, but I swear, its not helping that the only thing people are talking about is how long it is.
It was really good, but I'd still prefer if Blade Runner never got a sequel. I loved basically all of it until [sp]around the point Ford really became part of the movie - it wasn't really Ford's role as such, but suddenly there was a lot of baggage for the movie to carry around. And the rebels scene fucked me up good; just before then I was about to turn to my friend and say "well, you couldn't really make a better Blade Runner sequel than this", but then the scene came around, and I had to sigh and felt like rolling my eyes. Considering the current box office, you now have a sequel baiting, pointless scene that'll never have a payoff. Jared Leto's character also made me want to get up of my seat and walk out of the cinema, it just came off as shallow and pretentious to me, and honestly it was agonizing how slowly he talked - it just made me zone out completely. Maybe he said something thoughtful, but everything he said was delivered as if it was just the epitome of philosophical enlightenment, and that just makes for a flat, uninteresting delivery in my opinion.
I liked the idea of Tyrell having made Rachael extra special - basically the best way (I've heard to far) to tie this film into the first imo. But the whole replicant-human war thing ("SHE'S GONNA LEAD THE UPRISING BECAUSE SHE'S SPECIAL") really did nothing for me; why not just keep it at "Deckard doesn't want his daughter to be found, Joe helps out"? Kill off Deckard's character, have Joe promise to protect her, have an ending where she gets away on borrowed time. Instead we have an ending scene without any real closure, setting stuff up for another sequel. Really takes the movie down a notch in my opinion.
Also, the score sucked. All we got was a bunch of bass, a little hint (a single note, usually) of the original's score here and there, and then at the end we got some actual melody (from the original, of course), and then for the end credits you had something that sounded like road construction up close. Contrast that with the original that had so much memorable music, and it's just a huge disappointment - I'd honestly have preferred if they had just ripped the original score. As my friend (who hasn't really been following the movie much at all) asked me before I watched it - "Why isn't Vangelis doing the score?". And well, why isn't he?
The good parts: Well, the first 1.5-2 hours - I liked Gosling's character, I found his romance with the AI interesting, and obviously the whole movie was pretty much gorgeous. I know I'm being quite harsh up top, but I really did like the movie a lot. It'd be better if it had been a closed off story, the same way the original was. [/sp]
Haven't watched the HiTB review yet, didn't want to sully my own ppinion.
I'm really surprised by the discussion of length, especially people's complaints about scenes dragging on. I heard this before I entered the movie and at the end of it I thought, wait, nothing dragged in the movie.
Maybe it's because I'm fresh off the heels of watching Evangelion, which had numerous slow parts on purpose (including one scene that hangs on a single frame for a full minute), so my standards are a bit different at the moment?
Still, I think there's value to be had in movies like this that aren't afraid to be quiet or even slow at points. Sometimes, I find that two characters staring at each other in silence for a half minute can trump any dialogue or interaction you could write in terms of communicating a feeling. I'd really like to see one of those film as art youtube channels cover this topic.

The one scene that really made me go okay when is this gonna be over was the [sp]hologram/prostitute merge[/sp] it felt like it was 10 minutes of fondling.

I don't think you like this if you didn't like the first

That was boner inducing why would you want that to stop? Real talk that scene was actually super important
