I found it interesting, since I didn't really get why the song was called the "Harlem Shake" seeing as the lyrics are hispanic and it doesn't really seem like Harlem-type music.
It's an unintentional thing, but it has people on both sides thinking it's offensive, or that it misrepresents them.
I love this* video! I was waiting for when someone would say something! I understand that people, well, white people absolutely clueless that the Harlem Shake was already a dance. But what they are doing in these videos isn't a dance. With every video, people just wiggle about in different ways. No consistency. The mania is the group dynamic, mask crap. whatever. At least there is some documentation that the Harlem Shake existed before pop america thought they actually created culture. As if...

this is a video i’ve wanted to exist
there’s realistically nothing wrong with the tune or even the first video that started the “Harlem Shake” fad. the big issue lies in the association and exploitation of said unintentional association.

When a dumb dance is associated to where you're from, and its essentially making fun of a REAL dance, i'd get offended too.
"wow im so offended wtf disrespectful"

So if someone were to make a dance called "The Gook", would you tell asian people who complained to shut up too?
I'm glad this isn't really popular. I can see it getting old really quick.

Because Harlem is a race

Yeah I get so fucking offended when I see regular bread sold as "Texas toast" outside of Texas
Except the dance isn't called the Harlem Shake (the viral videos), the SONG is called the Harlem Shake, the dance is not. It's not even a dance.

The song does call for people to "do the harlem shake" though

Thats a god damn food item from a grocery store thats PROBABLY based off of or was in the past from texas.

For those wondering, here's a 2011 video explaining the actual harlem shake:

And its just a dumb fucking dance that the majority of the population doesn't know about/ give a shit about. Dumb kids everywhere are "doing the Harlem shake" because its a real life fad and people are trying to have "fun" with it. They aren't doing it to make fun of Harlem or the people that live there. Even if everyone was making fun of the original Harlem shake, who gives a fuck. If people can't take a parody or a joke then get the fuck off this earth. The people doing "Harlem shake" videos aren't offending anyone or offending any culture.

Is it fun being edgy and not understanding that other people think different things than you?

this is very culturally important i am upset that people are making videos that no one actually thinks is associated with the dance itself

The only people who find this "offensive" are those who are extremely attached to their home place, which is pretty much the same as extreme patriotism, which I think we can all agree is bad.
I just hope this meme dies soon. Every 10th thread made seems to mention it.
4:26 "Harlem is actually really hardcore if you really think about it. There's a whole bunch of gangs and fights and everything, and that just looks like some silly stuff."
Who in their right mind would be proud of gang violence?

Most importantly, what does the dance have to do with the city (let alone gangs), other than it's name and origin?

Harlem has always been associated with the Harlem Renaissance which spawned many new forms of art and culture so I understand the sentiment.
Why do people hate this "meme" so much?
"wow im so offended wtf disrespectful"

For the same reason that commercial that was once funny becomes annoying after the billionth time seeing, and for the same reason why "Call Me Maybe" went from "medicore" to "most annoying thing on the planet."
I think most people already had enough with Gangnam Style. Which is funny because both of them talk about cities, or district, in Gangnam's case.

oh shut up. it's just having pride about your roots.
oh shut up. it's just having pride about your roots.
I'm not saying that's bad, the problem is when some people take it a bit too far.

I'd think that instead of blatantly flaming it after you think it becomes "annoying" you'd just let it fucking pass.
I've also seen this receive more hate than what you stated.

Well you know how people are, they have to go out of their way to open the thread and call people stupid. Human nature.
Why do people hate this "meme" so much?
because its everywhere.
i mean, even cartoon network and nintendo did harlem shake videos.
when silly memes like this get that popular it becomes hard to ignore.
