well that just showed the entire fucking movie in one trailer
jesus christ
i read that book as a kid and honestly that's not how i visualized the world at all.
This sucks. I was hype for the idea of a movie, now I'm just pissed off.
Was this supposed to be in the future? I was imaging future, but the village stuck to look like the 18th or 19th century. kind of like how the movie the Village was.
I cringed when they used Requiem for a Dream in the trailer
wasn't the giver the dude from goatse?
The trailer makes it look like he stumbles upon the Giver, but in the book he was specifically chosen to be the next Giver. What the hell?
This trailer was slightly more disappointing than the ending of the book.
Movie is not in black and white, 0/10
The book was bad, I don't exactly have high hopes for this film honestly.
The fact that there were no visuals is one of the things that made the book good, in my opinion. I don't think it could translate into a good movie at all.
hated the book

read it in middle school
dont remember shit except it sucked
hated the book

It is an extremely prolific book, and I found it's morals to present themselves as I became older, I also read it in middle school and did not fully comprehend the subject matter.

The movie, however, looks absolutely awful.

i'm 100% sure it would be different than how i remembered it
the only thing i remember is how shitty i thought the books society was

It is in black in white...[sp]until he discovers color.[/sp]
I thought it was going to be an adaptation of The Giving Tree.

The way "The Community" was described gave the impression of being very remote, isolated, and agrarian, but also having some kind of connection to a more powerful group with at least modern technology.

Yeah. The "reveal" that [sp]everybody but the giver is colorblind, but how this is only (explicitly) revealed to the reader partway through[/sp] was what really stood out for me when I read it. It was a cool little trick that was unfortunately tied very closely to the medium: A movie just makes it too obvious, and it really takes away the main thing that made the book memorable for me.
(Yeah, this book is a middle-school standard (and moreover the trailer spoils it), so I probably didn't have to tag that, but I did anyway)

I enjoyed the book but the ending made me hate it.
[sp]It's this big tense hunt/chase scene after the main character escapes the village, and then all the sudden "the guy finds a sled and rides it down a hill."[/sp]
The trailer makes it look like he stumbles upon the Giver, but in the book he was specifically chosen to be the next Giver. What the hell?
Also in the book the Giver didn't even call himself that at first. Originally the Giver was just the old receiver of memory, he only asked to be called that some time into Jonas' training.
It's been a while since I've read the book but I don't recall anything about it being set in the far future, or any specific time period for that matter. Are they just slapping on whatever theme they feel like because they can? This doesn't look like it will do the book any bit of justice. I get feeling that Lowry wouldn't be too keen on that.

I haven't read the book since middle school, but I seem to recall households having 1984-esque recording devices, with only certain people allowed to turn theirs off. There was also a loudspeaker at one point.

When I read that, I was beyond pissed off. The book already was uninteresting for me but that part just took the cake. What a lazy as hell ending, clearly couldn't come up with anything. It's like the writer just got to that part and was like - "You know what, let's just end it here." That ending meant nothing, it still means nothing, and is the absolute laziest writing I had ever encountered. I still can't believe there was only like, 2 people who agreed with me at the time.
I still fail to see what morals or messages the book is trying to send, whatever message it had certainty wasn't displayed with that ending.
Also, [sp]Does he die? I know it's up to interpretation - but what the hell did he really find? I'm starting to think he just died and was imagining that. It's hard when the book ends in the ONE suspense-filled part with 3 sentences.[/sp]
In terms of the movie, the acting's awful, the trailer literally revealed everything except the last 4 minutes of the film probably, doesn't follow the book [sp]The community being any-bit suspicious of him, him trying to convince his friends, etc.[/sp] , it's a disgrace.

I remember in my English class, my teacher telling a story about a student she had that was really unruly, and just downright horrible student, until he started reading this book and he loved it. Until the ending, and then he got pissed right off, threw the book at her and ran out of the school.

Huh, I just looked up the original book on Wikipedia, there are 3 other books in the same setting.
Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004), and Son (2012)
uh i'm pretty sure the main character didn't save some dumb bimbo bitch from the village but [sp]the baby that was a part of the family unit he was in that was to be killed the next day for being too "different"[/sp]. Fuck the people making this movie and fuck the movie in general.

That's in Messenger, not Gathering Blue.
It looks like they took some shit from the book and then turned it into Equillibrium without the guns.
oh my god they are using the requiem for a dream song
that instantly makes any movie shit no matter what (except for maybe the original)
I started to think it actually looked decent. Then they ruined the entire film
