So in order to avoid the nuclear holocaust of losing revenue, AIDS SHIT WAR BORING FUCK.
Shitposting aside, I'm a bit out of the loop. What is the adpocalypse and what has Youtube done to fuck everything up this time?

To my understanding, Youtube has been receiving so many complaints from advertisers about their content appearing on "inappropriate" channels that they've just gone full nuclear and started disabling ads on ANYTHING considered even remotely inappropriate, so you'd have to have a clean channel full of completely family friendly content to get decent ad revenue.
There's rumors about there being a blacklist on channels that automatically blocks ads on videos even if they're unlisted and unviewed as well.

In a nutshell:
Watch these in chronological order. Top one first. NOTE: Earrape, lower your volume

So even 10 seconds of a screenshot will get you banned from receiving ad revenue, which further suggests that there might be some kind of blacklist in operation.
Really, I don't even see how they managed to turn this into a such a big fucking problem. Youtube already has inappropriate content tags, all they have to do is separate advertisers between these so if Dawn is gonna get super butthurt about their dish soap getting advertised after some Let's Player makes a boob joke they can choose to not advertise to not promote their product on "inappropriate videos" while Budweiser takes the slot instead. But nope, they just fuck up the revenue of like 90% of their content and cause a bunch of channels to slow down, shut down, or go running to Patreon. The Youtube division has to be the stupidest part of Google.
For those who haven't had AdBlock on, are you getting less ads?
coz I fucking don't
so what is this really about

Patreon is a great thing for youtubers tbh. No longer being beholden to the ridiculous whims of advertisers really opens up door for content creators.
How exactly does it hurt a company to have their ads on a video inappropriate for some audiences? Is anyone really going to see their ad and associate them with the video they just watched?

Surprisingly yes, not a lot, but enough that it gets the execs all hot and bothered.
I wanted to make a post here about my opinion on the Adpocolypse but as soon as I mentioned corperate executives I just became too blinded with rage to actually make anything cohesive. I think I have a major anger issue when it comes to big businesses.
Why is Youtube even doing this, don't they make all their money from ad revenue? Mass removing ads from videos seems like a lose lose situation.
Can't make any money from ads if companies don't want to send them ads.

They also get money from YouTube red subscribers, but it's probably a dramatically lower amount than advertisers. YouTube red is a pretty good deal though, no ads (even on mobile) and you get access to play music as well for $10/month

Per view it's way more than an advertisement, provided your content is longer form. Red pays based on hours watched. TotalBiscuit, for example, counted Youtube Red for something huge like >30% of his revenue when it first came out.
I don't know if Youtube Red money goes to advertiser unfriendly videos, though
I was seriously thinking about getting Youtube Red before all this happened. They're still playing just as many ads, just now I know none of that ad money is going to the people who actually created that content, so why the hell would I watch an ad just to support Youtube?
personally I wouldn't give youtube any money by buying youtube red. if they're going to destroy their own community that is.
I wonder if this has affected those weirdos that dress up as elsa and spiderman, i hope it has
They're also blanket removing revenue from certain topics, and it seems like complete random as well. It hit a fuckload of ASMR youtubers, but not the ones with sexual content... at all. Like there are channels with overtly erotic content that don't even get touched, but a bunch of users completely unrelated are getting slammed for it.

Those are the ones that DON'T get a strike for being unfriendly. It's weird.

It isn't that less adverts are being shown on YT, its that less videos are being ok'd for earning revenue from the adverts.

Nah. That affects it too. Less advertisers means that bids are worth less, meaning that ads shown pay less.
Though how much an ad pays has pretty much been steadily in decline pretty much throughout youtube's history.
Youtube probably should have hyped and pushed youtube red a lot more tbh, along with implementing twitch-style donations and subs that they take a small cut of. It's a much nicer way of funding the website and creators than advertisements.
YT Red actually apparently makes more money per view than non-red viewers, as reported by several youtubers
