Watch this satire video makes me think that the kid was running up to the convoy to hand it over without any intent to do anything wrong. Of course this is a movie and in real life it may have been different.

[sp]The kid most definitely had the intent to blow up the convoy, so Chris Kyle shoots him. The mother then runs up and goes to throw the grenade at the convoy but Chris shoots her too, making her throw fall short. That's at least what happens in the movie. I don't think there was ever a kid in the real life event, just the woman.[/sp]
