Honestly the game doesn't seem that bad.
Honestly the game doesn't seem that bad.
It obviously isn't, but it's even more of an Overwatch ripoff than Battleborn was. It is free though
Apparently it pits you out against bots for the first 5 levels without telling you.
It obviously isn't, it's even more of an Overwatch ripoff than Battleborn was. But it is free
Battleborn had it's issues but it was sooooo not an Overwatch clone.
I mean it's free. If you're bored it doesn't seem that bad
It obviously isn't, but it's even more of an Overwatch ripoff than Battleborn was.
Battleborn, as well as a majority of the "similar" characters were, get this, announced before Overwatch. As in before Overwatch as a whole was even announced. I greatly prefer Overwatch, but calling Battleborn a ripoff is outright false.

while paladins was announced before overwatch is, you honestly cant watch that footage, look at the ui, and not think of it as an overwatch clone. however, I dont really think any character designs and whatnot are inspired directly by overwatch. I mean, the games got announced at the same time, and got released within months of eachother: you cant just make an entire roster in that amount of time when you have the same characters dating back to the initial announcement. I feel like this was all just something where the same group of people brought up an idea for this type of hero arena shooter, and paladins/overwatch took it the same way, while battleborn took it a different, yet similar route. and failed miserably.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/83udvIi.png[/img_thumb]
She has a bow, Hanzo ripoff.
She has a bow, Hanzo ripoff.
aren't her animations and attacks also really really similar to Hanzos?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Paladins/comments/53qusf/a_brief_history_of_paladins_as_response_to/ Lengthy dev post on Paladin's history and relation to Overwatch. Basically everything's based on Global Agenda, and the game in its current state is the closest to what they wanted before Overwatch was announced.
I don't think it's really possible to rip off very generic and basic ideas for a class/hero/champion/whatever. I think people were just overreacting at first. None of the heroes in Overwatch strike me as "original" in terms of design, but that is kind of the point. They're supposed to fill roles people may have been used to in other games. Overwatch is like Smash Bros in a way, but for shooters. You have quite an idea of how a character will play even before picking them.

[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/NLgz0hh.png[/img_thumb] Why bird armor when you can BE a bird right? Blizzard do not have 'person with bow and arrow', 'person with rocket launcher and jetpack' 'person with mech' or any other basic simple designs copyrighted. None of Overwatch's designs are particularly original, this game really doesn't steal that much from it considering that it was announced before Overwatch and I played it in Beta before Overwatch was out. I'll admit guys like Fernando are shitty equivalents but I'm willing to call that coincidence since Reinhardt's design isn't anywhere near unique AND Fernando and Reinhardt were unveiled pretty much at the same time. Why does nobody mention Androxus's completely unique abilities before calling him a McCree clone? Why does nobody even mention the design of Pip, a hero who is actually new, when talking about this? I think Paladins is an unpolished mess of a game, but calling it an Overwatch clone fails to understand game design. The hero designs are similar, but only because neither are particularly unique. The level design is vastly different, and the way you play the game is vastly different due to how much of an influence the card decks can have on how a hero plays.
Ok so apparently I was wrong about OW being announced after Paladins but my point still stands: none of Overwatch's designs are particularly original and Blizzard don't have copyright on designs like 'person with bow'.
Oh?
So let's completely ignore the fact that Battleborn has lanes, minions, towers, in-game leveling, and items, and is essentially a MOBA first and foremost and Overwatch is has literally none of those things and is not a MOBA at all...
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/iqhwDBK.png[/img_thumb]
Little character in robot suit has been a MOBA staple since DOTA. You'd be hard pressed to find a MOBA or MOBA-influenced game that doesn't have one. Toby owes his design to characters like THAT, not D.va- they behave NOTHING alike. Toby being a mid-range territorial defender, D.Va being a close-range hit and run harasser with a unique death mechanic.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/83udvIi.png[/img_thumb]
Okay they both have bows? They have totally different ability sets so unless you're claiming Overwatch invented people with bows in video games, I don't see your point.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/aJYAbBV.png[/img_thumb] Pretty much just Zenyatta sitting in a chair, same attacks
Same attacks??? He has a big AOE heal/damage rift, an anti-shield taser, a mortar, and a black hole ability. He's not a robot, nor a monk... Yeah I totally see how he's the same as Zenyatta...
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ziGpCuk.png[/img_thumb] Reinhardt Jr
Has a health-stealing AOE, a ranged shield throw, and can lay down an area that boosts damage, can shield damage to herself, not others... Not Reinhardt. Unless of course you mean Overwatch invented power armor as well.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/noIXUEo.png[/img_thumb] Mercy is that you?
Again, they just have staves. Don't even look alike. Behave 100% differently. Ambra is a AOE damage dealer with life-draining. Soooo yeah Mercy clone definitely. The only ones I can give you even slight credit to (and god damn do I mean slight) are ISIC/Bastion and Benedict/Pharah (and even then neither are particularly unique concepts) but considering Battleborn was even announced before Overwatch, I'd sooner give them the benefit of the doubt. Can't say you've convinced me.
Ok so apparently I was wrong about OW being announced after Paladins but my point still stands: none of Overwatch's designs are particularly original and Blizzard don't have copyright on designs like 'person with bow'.
Sure, but but there's a bazillion ways to make an already existing thing feel new, paladins fails at doing this because they outright copied overwatch's animations / feel for most of their skills and weapon reloads. See: turtle guy, dragon guy, demon revolver guy. If for example the turtle guy had a hand hook or some shit and he could launch it to pull people, it would feel different, but they outright copied roadhog's walking animation and launch / pull animations. Same can be said about the dragon dude, they could have made the rocket launcher reload in a million different ways, instead they decided to go with the exact same type of launcher pharah has, with a missile rack that's visible and has to be changed to reload. I can see people denfending the game abut other things, but visually, they dropped the ball fucking hard.
Oh?
Ooooh, let me take a crack at this:
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/iqhwDBK.png[/img_thumb]
I guess Titanfall, a game with people in mechs that came out two and a half years ago, is also a ripoff of Overwatch?
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/83udvIi.png[/img_thumb]
Thorn (the Battleborn character) was the FIRST character from Battleborn that was ever shown. Ever. Which, again, was before Overwatch was even announced - almost a full year before, actually.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/IsVHiO3.png[/img_thumb] Both robots and both transform into a turret
ISIC (the Battleborn character) doesn't transform into a turret. They are also mechanically very different. But I guess any robot is a clone of Overwatch?
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/aJYAbBV.png[/img_thumb] Pretty much just Zenyatta sitting in a chair, same attacks
They don't have the same attacks, though. They're not even the same role. Yes they're both support, but Kleese is more about shielding allies while Zenyatta is more about healing. Gameplay-wise, Kleese has more in common with Zarya.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ziGpCuk.png[/img_thumb] Reinhardt Jr
lol no? Reinhardt is a tank, Galilea is a defense and focuses on stunning and debuffing. They are literally nothing alike aside from wearing armor (which Blizzard didn't invent armor, believe it or not).
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/noIXUEo.png[/img_thumb] Mercy is that you?
They are NOTHING ALIKE aside from using staves.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/NLgz0hh.png[/img_thumb] Why bird armor when you can BE a bird right? Plays pretty much the same
Once again, Benedict was announced before Overwatch was even a thing.
So who ripped off who?
Neither ripped off the other. It's entirely coincidental. Battleborn was in development since 2009 since it came from Furious Four - Overwatch was in development since 2014, but its roots extend back to the late 90's. If you're going to nitpick minute similarities, do a better job at it. For example, Battleborn's hero Alani shoots balls at stuff so she'd obviously be a Zenyatta clone. Except they play nothing alike, so again it's totally pointless. [editline]im late[/editline] Someone already did this, I should have probably read the rest of the thread before posting.

Androxus has a set of abilities that aren't seen in Overwatch and his deck variants only make him more unique, Drogoz too has extremely different abilities and playstyles to Pharah plus he's visually very different. As for design, I really don't see how turtle guy and Roadhog look alike, or how Androxus looks like anyone in Overwatch (no Blizzard didn't get a copyright for edgy design with Reaper) and there's no dragon in Overwatch.

Go play roadhog and then tell me makoa's animations aren't exactly the same, even the reload, EVEN tho it's a whole different weapon. Also I'm talking visuals only here, not about their kits, but just because they have a different play style and more skills added on top doesn't mean some particular skills aren't exactly the same. It just baffles me they have the balls to say that "overwatch wasn't an inspiration" when they have characters with up to 3 of the same thing, EVEN IF THEY DON'T PLAY THE SAME. There's a sniper with a mine, and her sniper turns into a rifle, there's a turtle with a hook and a "shotgun" for a 2 hit combo, there's a dragon with a jetpack, a meter for said jetpack, and a rocket launcher with like 6 shots, there's a demon with a revolver with 2 fire modes and a roll skill, there's a generic military dude with a generic rifle with a generic sprint skill. Like CMON, I'm pretty sure they play different, but it's so blatanty obvious where they got their ideas ( FOR THE VISUALS, MOSTLY ANIMATIONS AND WEAPON DESIGNS, AS WELL AS PARTS OF A CHARACTER'S KIT, NOT THE WHOLE THING.) from.
There's only so many ways you can animate "hook in one hand and gun in other" without it looking stupid. If you can come up with something that looks unique with the same weapon set and yet not covering half your screen then good on you.
Then maybe they should come up with something original instead of "hook combo character #200", or like I said before, just come up with something that isn't another hook / anchor???? Just because "there's only so many ways you can animate a hook" doesn't excuse the fact that they outright copied another game when they could have done so many different things in the concept stage. I can't think of anything in battleborn that is so blatant as this game, even the supposed zenyatta "clone" that was mentioned before looks different in every way, animations included, even if her attacks are p much the same.
I mean I'll admit the mechanics of the hook are very similar to OW but to be fair it's really not an original concept, and nobody is accusing Roadhog of being a clone of Pudge or Pudge of being a clone of whatever he was based on etc etc.
I still can't get over how unfinished the game looks, the animations are so, off.
I still can't get over how unfinished the game looks, the animations are so, off.
Well the game is still in beta and characters are always getting slightly reworked so animations are usually still placeholder. It's also not a "beta" that you would normally see in games, Hirez's betas are actual betas that are constantly being changed and improved upon. Anyone who's played Smite back in its beta days knows that it's very, very, different from what it is now. Almost every character back then has gotten remodels and better animations.
does this game have a junkrat like class? if so, then it's time for some bombing! [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] OH that furry like class! looks SUPER SWEER ♥ [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] that seem to be the closest! [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] installing!
