Lucky the guy was filming because apparently the cops were writing him a ticket after taking the lady's word that he ran a red light. He showed them the footage and instead the cops wrote tickets for the woman.
One of many reasons why I have a dash cam, can't really trust everybody else on the road.
Never ever trust a Japanese minivan on the road. You can say whatever you want about irresponsible civ drivers, audi drivers etc. but hands down Japanese minivans are the most likely to get you into an accident. Especially Toyota siennas. Every time I've been close to an accident it's been because of one of those damn things.

Also you can see the minivan has already been into a front end collision, whoever was driving that thing is fucked license wise.
Not excusing the woman but the light turned yellow before he got there, and he had plenty of time to stop.

1. It would have to be a pretty hard stop.
2. The lady didn't even slow down at the red light. She clearly ran it.

There was a huge explanation for this on Reddit, somewhere.. Something about how it's perfectly legal within the state of Georgia to run a yellow light (Since the guy that recorded the video was in Georgia)

Here it is
Its legal to run yellow lights here too in Minnesota, I didn't think it was different in other states :v:
Is it illegal to "run a yellow light" anywhere? It's just letting drivers know that it is about to turn to red. Depending on speed and distance that is plenty of time to maintain the speed limit and pass through before it switches over. The minivan would be seeing red that entire time.
That light turned yellow way before he got there. I bet that light was red by the time he got halfway into the intersection.

Why are you blaming the victim for getting hit by someone who CLEARLY wan't paying any attention to the light?
Even if it was yellow for him, its still red for her. Furthermore panic braking at a yellow is just as dangerous because most people will go under a yellow (especially since it just turned yellow!) if anyone was behind him he probably would have been rear-ended.

I don't know how it is where this video was taken but here in Alberta you're supposed to stop for a yellow if you have a reasonable amount of time to do so and can do so safely. It's basically a buffer to let cars already in the intersection or that can't stop safely at the incoming red light to clear the intersection.

and if you have a red light you're supposed to stop completely, not drive through and hit someone who happened to try and beat a yellow light
You're supposed to in Virginia, too. That being said, almost all lights that aren't more than twenty years old have an automatic three-second delay between rotations, and even without the delay, the lady in the video was not going a speed she would have been able to appropriately stop for a red light on, which she still clearly had the entire time until the collision.
Sidebar: the next time you're in an accident involving the front of your car being struck; TURN THE CAR OFF. I don't know how many engine fires I've seen start because the person caught a gas or oil line and it hit the iron and ignited. Plus, you're not supposed to move the vehicle at all until authorities arrive unless it's a minor fender-bender without injuries.
That light turned yellow way before he got there. I bet that light was red by the time he got halfway into the intersection.
nah it was only just turning yellow as it went out of shot - looks to me like he was 10-20m from it when it turned to yellow which is not a very safe/comfortable stopping distance considering he was happily driving at the speed limit
regardless, from that light turning red there should be at least a couple of seconds before the other lights would turn green - the lady in the minivan would have been driving toward and through a red light the entire time
dont know why some people are trying so hard to blame someone who acted perfectly within the limits of the law
That light turned yellow way before he got there. I bet that light was red by the time he got halfway into the intersection.
Even if so, the lady would have had the red light for between 1-3 seconds. Also as someone pointed out she was going way too fast to stop regardless. She just straight up ran that shit regardless of who was crossing.

i'm not fucking victim blaming, i was stating a fact.

Facts that are completely irrelevant. He would have made the light easily weren't for the dumbass in a minivan speeding through an intersection.

If he had not ran the yellow he would have been spared the accident. Thats not victim blaming, thats called facts; Victim Precipitation.
Things like this make me want to get a dashcam. I don't know why I haven't yet. Also with his hand on the horn at impact I"m surprised but glad he wasn't injured from the airbag deployment.

Except we've already established that driving through a yellow is completely legal and often done in the United States. It's still not his fault.
But 'running the yellow' also implies it being illegal, which (again, using VA law because I was raised here and that's what I learned, and we're stricter on stuff like this than a lot of states), unless he accelerated to make it through the light to above the speed limit, isn't illegal if he made it across the intersection before it turned red. In the shot, I couldn't really tell either way.

"if he had not broken a law which i have just invented and then been struck by someone very clearly breaking the law, he'd have been fine"
[editline]11th February 2015[/editline]
"if he had slammed on his brakes and caused a collision behind him, he'd have been spared the collision by the person ahead of him breaking the law"

How do people look at a video of someone speeding through a red light at a 4-way intersection and causing an accident then blame the one dude driving legally.
I didnt blame him. The other driver is at fault.
I didnt blame him. The other driver is at fault.
"If he had not done x then y would not have happened" is blaming.
If he had not ran the yellow he would have been spared the accident. Thats not victim blaming, thats called facts; Victim Precipitation.
Had she just not worn that skimpy outfit to that bar, she wouldn't have been raped.
That's not victim blaming, that's called facts; Victim Precipitation.
...
You know what would else have avoided this collision? Had the minivan not BROKEN THE LAW and caused an accident. Whoah, guess who's at fault? The person breaking the law. You're supposedly a cop, you should understand this concept very well.

Half of Facepunch probably aren't even driving age. Otherwise, they would know that running a red light >>>>>> worse than driving through a yellow light.

and i can differentiate between precipitation and blaming quite well, thanks. Everyone in this thread gets their panties in a bunch when the dude drove through the clearing light and got hit because of it. If he had appropriate stopping distance he should have stopped.
End of fucking story.

Do you know who should have stopped from an appropriate distance?
The fucking minivan
He did nothing wrong in this video. End of story.

Is it ok to run a red light ever?
